It doesn't get much better than this for Passion Sunday.

The men in this performance have the best blend and most unified vowels I have ever heard in any choir, ever. This is the stuff choir directors dream of.

My choir will perform this in a few months, and this recording is our model.

Morten Lauridsen - Sure On This Shining Night
University of Utah Singers
Laurel Enke, piano

A colleague is playing his final master's degree recital tomorrow afternoon. I had set him up with a piano accompanist for the concerto he's performing since I was too busy to learn it.

This morning, that pianist called and informed him he had fallen and broken his arm.

Guess who has two thumbs and is trying to learn the piano reduction for a concerto in less than 24 hrs? 😬🎹

MAJOR news:

Gustavo Dudamel, Star Maestro, to Leave L.A. for New York Philharmonic

Dudamel, a charismatic 42-year-old conductor, will take up the Philharmonic’s podium in 2026, in a major coup for the orchestra.

BIG concert recording gig tomorrow, using very fancy new toys and a couple new (to me) techniques, at an event that hasn't happened since pre-covid.

I am strapped in and ready to pull some audio heat.🔥

📢 Attention, !!!

I just bought this fantastic battery-powered stand light. You all need one. It has a wide light bar of LEDs with a frosted cover, five levels of brightness, three levels of color temperature, a very wide and strong spring clip, long adjustable gooseneck, and USB-C charging.

Just snapped this pic at my music production battle station where I'm laying down piano and vocal tracks. This is max brightness; neutral temperature.

Several of you asked for samples o the dress rehearsal I recorded of my choir. I was quite happy with the recording and you can find some samples linked below. Please forgive our conductor barking at us to look up in the first selection - many of the men needed the reminder, but I wanted to include the men's-only piece as well as the one with just the women. There is some nice variety of instrumentation also.

Just got back from dress rehearsal with the choir I sing with; concert is tomorrow.

It was a good run overall. I had to do my usual verbal whipping of the guys who had their heads buried in their folders instead of watching our conductor and thus were missing things. Otherwise, I think we had a lot of good moments. I recorded it, and if anything came out particularly well, I'll share it here.

Two fingers of rye now; coffee tomorrow.

I cannot think of a better time to remind everyone that the piece commonly known as the "Ukrainian Bell Carol" was not originally a Christmas song, and its actual meaning in Ukrainian is so much more interesting than Peter Wilhousky's later English adaptation. Here is an excellent performance and background. Be sure to read the translation.

For anyone who loves Christmas choral music, here is a thread I made two years ago with a bunch of my favorites. I spent quite a bit of time tracking down the best performance of each piece I could find. Enjoy!
