Question what was your favorite movie that bombed at the box office. And later because a cult classic ?

Mine is "Office Space"

when the movie is too quotable to fail

@corlin

Easy twofer -- and they both came out the summer of '82: Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" and John Carpenter's remake of "The Thing."

"Office Space" is a good choice, too. Judge also did "Idiocracy" which died (and also has cult status) cuz bigwigs at Fox yanked support for it. I wonder why...? 🤔 🤓

@InUnfunky @corlin

Adore both of these. Definitely in my top movies of all time.

@tyghebright @corlin

Yes, I know it’s “PeopleTV” 🙄🤓 but it’s Keith David talking about “The Thing.” 🤣

@corlin
Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, starring Uma Thurman, with music by k.d.lang.

@corlin

Ricky Horror Picture Show - it ran in Austin longer than anywhere else. Dammit, Janet, was there ever a better cult classic!?!!

@nealfig @corlin

“There’s a light-I-I-I-I-I-ight/burning in the fireplace”

@corlin

Oh, man. It’s hard to choose just one!

Bladerunner
Empire Records
Labyrinth
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Hunger (yes, Bowie himself was a cult classic; and the score was exquisite!)

@whonat I agree with every one of those except The Hunger, which I haven't seen. @corlin

@whonat @corlin Bladerunner was a favorite too because I was a fan of Dick (I got over it) and because it was well made.

@whonat @corlin

Nice choices. I was obsessed with The Hunger when I was in college.

@corlin Zardoz managed to convey some pretty complex notions with little in the way of fx. I loved it.

@Lindy @corlin

A better movie than people realize. They get stuck on the cheesy elements

@tyghebright I like cheese...especially when it conveys a point. @corlin

@corlin ”Xanadu”. Loved that movie as a kid, it was such a bomb back in the day and then developed a following.

Also “Clue”, so quotable now and it has become more famous than the movie that inspired it, “Murder by Death”.

@Redskye572 @corlin Second The Hunger. Our family loved both Cutthroat Island and The Phantom (with Billy Zane), which were both solid B movies. I also really liked French films Diva and La femme Nikita.

@corlin

My very favorite cult classic which didn’t do well at the box office: Dazed and Confused.

Like @daniel, I’d give honorable mention to The 13th Warrior.

@corlin A few come to mind, but "Dredd" stands out. Enough of a flop to ensure no sequels (booooo!) but enough of a cult following to become something of a classic (yaaaaay!).

@corlin

Buckaroo Banzai.

Didn't even earn back half its $17 million budget at the box office but it's become a cult classic. (They couldn't figure out how to market it.)

I adore it. My favorite movie.

@corlin Head Office from '85 was a classic in my circles, but I'm not sure about more broadly. All star cast Eddie Albert, Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Jane Seymour, Don King, etc. Hilarious! 😆
