Status update: I've installed Debian 12 on the three Zima Blades, and I've "racked" one in my network cabinet for now (and ordered power adapters so I can stick the other two in there as well).

I've also used Salt to apply my baseline config, and will be building states to do the rest of the setup (Nomad, Consul, etc). That way it'll be super-quick to get the other two set up once the additional equipment arrives.

This will be fun!

Yeah, things are going Just Great™️ over in land.

Tam says "We've acted decisively to increase customer value" while The Register points out that some license costs have escalated "by 500 or 600 percent, in some cases making it cheaper to run workloads on bare metal instead of using server virtualization."

What a value!

I used to be in the "meh" camp but have shifted to "LOVE" in the past couple of years.

Almond Joy?

Banning TikTok Is Unconstitutional & Won’t Do Shit To Deal With Any Actual Threats.

Banning TikTok, rather than passing comprehensive federal privacy legislation, is nothing but xenophobic theater.

I really appreciate that balances this announcement of quantum-resistant encryption with the explanation that it is "a remedy against the illness that nobody has, without any guarantee that it will work" but that possible protection against future threats is much better than no consideration of such threats.

This post also provides a great explanation of the various challenges facing secure messaging apps as well as how SimpleX aims to address each.

Tau day is better than Pi day because you get twice as much pie.

Oh, and here's my best run from the practice autocross we held for the students. I felt pretty good about it, and the students seemed really impressed... But another instructor with the same vehicle setup (spec class) was over two seconds faster. I still have plenty to learn.

Please turn off your phone's keyboard sounds.

I've been really impressed with my new BOOX Air3 C color e-ink writing tablet so far, and I put together some quick thoughts about it over on my Gemlog:

I was too busy teaching racecar things this weekend to do anything with my new Zima Blade cluster other than just installing the memory, but look how cute this stack of single-board x86 computers is!

Hopefully I'll find time this week to actually set it up. I'm thinking I'll eventually turn this into a light Nomad cluster for doing container things.

Ugh, it's too early. I feel like I lost an hour somewhere.
