Several of you asked for samples o the dress rehearsal I recorded of my choir. I was quite happy with the recording and you can find some samples linked below. Please forgive our conductor barking at us to look up in the first selection - many of the men needed the reminder, but I wanted to include the men's-only piece as well as the one with just the women. There is some nice variety of instrumentation also.

Just got back from dress rehearsal with the choir I sing with; concert is tomorrow.

It was a good run overall. I had to do my usual verbal whipping of the guys who had their heads buried in their folders instead of watching our conductor and thus were missing things. Otherwise, I think we had a lot of good moments. I recorded it, and if anything came out particularly well, I'll share it here.

Two fingers of rye now; coffee tomorrow.

I cannot think of a better time to remind everyone that the piece commonly known as the "Ukrainian Bell Carol" was not originally a Christmas song, and its actual meaning in Ukrainian is so much more interesting than Peter Wilhousky's later English adaptation. Here is an excellent performance and background. Be sure to read the translation.

For anyone who loves Christmas choral music, here is a thread I made two years ago with a bunch of my favorites. I spent quite a bit of time tracking down the best performance of each piece I could find. Enjoy!

This piece always has deeply affected me, and this is the authoritative interpretation. I recommend listening in darkness.

^ Bonus points to the first person to name the piece this very famous rhythmic motif comes from.

As a diversion from what's going on, here are a few tracks from a chamber choir concert I performed in and recorded two days ago. For the audio people out there, I'm curious which mix you prefer.

concert time. Rolling 6 channels today. Line Audio CME Subcards at 30 cm, DPA 4061 omnis at 50 cm (combined as phased array) and my friend's AKG C414 pair in Blumlein as an alternate track.

Yes, we're singing in an old barn. One with lovely acoustics.
