@AkomoCombine "How's it going otherwise?" Well, the sink is clogged up again. Though it *is* easier getting the cat hair out when it's still attached to the cat so I have that going for me.

> Nice to see ya!
You too!

@FernLovebond I know, right? There's not even an IPO/exit strategy in sight, no algorithms trying to trigger lizard-brain responses. What was he thinking?

@Meredith I aspire to "fine" woodwork, though a few of the pieces so far have been quite good. Mostly these days, although still do the occasional furniture or small box project. This is a cedar pencil box I made for my wife.

I told Rockler "either build a store in Charlotte or stop sending me emails where 1/2 the stuff I want is in store only!"

So they built a store. And I'm taking the credit for it. You're welcome, Charlotte.

Just a couple days into CoSo and I have enough follows to keep my feed interesting and enough followers to spark some replies. Thanks for that!

@philipcardella The flip side is if a community of practice leaves, the vendors in that ecosystem would follow, both with their direct engagement and their ad money. For example, is a small community of IT specialists and a large portion of that community is on the birdsite. If they left, IBM and about a dozen vendors participating there would follow. (Not all of IBM's engagement & dollars of course, but most of those other vendors are single-purpose.)

@ECNC @Coffee_and_Salt You said "wreath" but the photo looked like a single flower. When I overcame the cognitive dissonance and clicked...wow! Great work!

@haltingproblems I am taking the approach to follow widely first, then refine and prune later.

Kind of like neuronal connections in a developing human brain, for whatever that's worth.

@philipcardella I think more in terms of communities. For example, no one pro leaving would make a dent but if the community relocated en masse somewhere else there would be a great disturbance in the force. And it isn't even that influential a community compared to others there.

I'd LOVE to see a critical mass of IT Security folks here.

Thanks for asking, @Coffee_and_Salt Lately I make stuff on the wood lathe, like this pencil pot and all the pens and pencils in it.

@FighttheFluff Thanks! I had not heard of that before. I have some that is pre-mixed but doesn't tend to soak in well. I've tried Cactus Juice but it's only good for small pieces since it needs oven-curing. A built-for-purpose penetrating resin sounds like just the thing. I'll look it up. Thanks!

@thereal_renaissance_man I have next week off and a GIANT chunk of cedar rough turned. I plan to core it out into 3 blanks and see if I can make a decent set of nesting bowls. So plenty of vicariousness will be delivered shortly. ;-)

Thanks, @rpardee
& @thereal_renaissance_man

I work with virtual servers and code all day at work so on my free time I like to make physical things you can hold in your hands. Mostly, these days, those are out of wood.

Oooh! A neighbor just texted and asked if I can have some fresh cut walnut logs! I said "you had me at "walnut".

Bowl in the photo is from a log the same guy gave me about this time last year. It had started to crack so I cast the whole workpiece in epoxy resin before turning the bowl. Hopefully this next batch will be more solid.

@mooseshoes Define "'s success" first. Twitter's business model is to sell your attention and that's best done by showing you content that provokes a response. CoSo's business model is to sell itself to you by providing enough value that enough users pay to keep it sustainable. For me, the CoSo model works better. I don't need an algorithm working to enrage me into engagement. I just need thoughtful, funny, creative people in my feed.

@kevinabq Sounds like the close-outs and markdowns from the sausage fest.

@Beanc Awesome analysis there. Thanks for the pointer!@

@Deadpool560 I did because the level of moderation and support required to run a server like this costs a lot and to do so without malvertising and user data brokering requires some other form of revenue. I'd have happily paid the birdsite for a malvertising-free experience. That alone was worth it to me.

OK, not importing all my old data but gotta post this one before calling it a night. Another piece from the river birch burl my neighbor gave me. I hated the finish the first time around so last week I re-mounted it on the lathe, carved away the top layer, sanded and hit it with Waterlox glossy. Ahhh, that's better. 10" wide x 5" tall.
