@Deadpool560 Joined tonight. Bit of a learning curve. My Notifications column was set to Mentions. I clicked All and discovered a lot of engagement I'd managed to ignore. People here seem to be friendly. Disappointed to find it's a closed hub though. Will have to maintain multiple accts or use 3rd party app to follow folks on other hubs.
@Toni_Walker Yes, but not on a shelf. This is about 2/3 of the birch burl I got from my neighbor. I have to keep turning it end for end as it dries. It has been almost a year since I took that shot and I'm only now starting to work through it. So far I've had to seek out the wood but I always make something for folks who gift it to me.
Thanks for the tips, @Beanc. I did put #woodturner in the profile and put #woodturning in the pix when I remember. Was that what you were referring to?
@Beanc I have next week off so my feed will have several pieces. I have a rough-turned chunk of cedar on the lathe now that I'll be coring and finishing into (hopefully) 3 nested bowls. Might do some pens. Lots of wood and turning kits in backstock.
@Toni_Walker It is burl from a river birch tree my neighbors cut down last year. Having to wait a year (or more for larger pieces) for the wood to dry is teaching me patience. I could make a kiln but that seems like cheating.
@Dazario In the help section I saw it referred to as a toot. But I'm new so take that with a grain of salt.
Thanks @ehurtley. I'm guessing turdsite was more descriptive but not intuitive enough.
Thanks, @ehurtley Hi Dapper!
When we aren't using it, we put the hippopottoman on an end table to make it harder for the cats to rip it up. Deisel's response was "Playing keep-away? That's not even a challenge."
@redenigma That was my impression last I visited, but that was at least a decade ago. The flood of ASCII-encoded software file trading there was what got me interested in ITSecurity back in the day. Ended up making a career out of it. So, thanks Usenet, for that at least.
@Lemon405 Meowers? No, that one escapes me. (Although at work there's a Git approval bot called LGTMeow which possibly makes me an unwitting meower?)
@TessNam Thanks!
@Toni_Walker Thanks! It's 4.5" in the back and about 2.5" in the front because the raw piece was wedge shaped. 3" diameter IIRc.
When I get done working with code all day, I need to make something I can hold. The lathe is a lot cheaper than therapy and possibly as/more effective.
@redenigma How/where do you access it? I thought it all went to archive.
@ehurtley About the same here. Was getting it off of dial-up BBS for the first few years. I remember thinking my 1200 baud modem was badass.
Someone mentioned they were not able to upload a photo so I'm testing with a pic of my latest #woodturning.
@kay_dub Thanks! Already pro but I may need to do the 3rd party app thing. Some of the more tech-minded folks I follow at the bird are on other hubs like mastodon.social and I'd hate to lose them.
@KarlFirefly Badge of honor!
I make stuff with code and with wood. Just, you know, not at the same time.
