@evamarie

I am limiting my news I half watch Lawrence O'Donnell and speed read headlines in here.
All preliminary really now. Keeping ourselves distracted here.
Sad I would rather watch shows with serial killer than reality right now.

@evamarie I'm semi-retired, no one to talk to while my husband is at work, no job since we moved, worried about my family and friends back home in Minnesota, stuck out here in the boonies in Norway, worrying about damn Trump destroying our country....I had to do whatever I could to raise my spirits so I decorated for Christmas, I'm almost done.

@evamarie I decorated for 2 reasons, 1. it gave me something to do because I am bored out of my mind and 2. it cheers me up. I've been depressed since Trump won the election. I needed to do this for me.

@evamarie

Nah me either. I have to stay away from it. ๐Ÿ’›

@heyrhiannon @evamarie I can't right now either.

About as close as I get is the late night fellas and John Oliver, and even then in small doses.

@evistre @evamarie

Small doses isn't too awful. I believe it's important to know what's going on without the spin of the major outlets or pundits, but again, in small doses.

@heyrhiannon @evamarie it's mostly the levity I need, I think.

If I could get a spinless delivery that still included some levity I'd be all over it.

@evistre @heyrhiannon @evamarie I check my USA Today app (free version) about twice a day right now for highlights. Thatโ€™s it. Iโ€™ve never watched cable news and stopped watching network news some time ago.

@misslovelymess
I have a TV but I'm too far away from towers to get over the air broadcast channels and streaming isn't an option.
Actually the TV sits in the guest room, unused.

I check a few places a few times a day.

@evistre @evamarie

@heyrhiannon Iโ€™ve been watching too much TV. This work trip reminds me how I need to stop doing that.

@evistre @evamarie

@misslovelymess

I don't think I could handle the audio and visual aspects, it's relentless. Reading is easier for me.

@evistre @evamarie

@heyrhiannon Iโ€™m definitely an appreciator of quality shows and movies. But thereโ€™s a lot of garbage I watch, and need to dump. I totally understand the overstimulation of it.

@evistre @evamarie

@misslovelymess
Shows, movies and sports are great, it's the news that grates.

@evistre @evamarie

@heyrhiannon Also, fun fact: reading for pleasure is only second to meditation in building brain resilience to mitigate the negative impacts of chronic toxic stress.

@evistre @evamarie

@evistre

I read a lot, both online and in my ebook reader.
CoSo has great book recommendations.

@misslovelymess @evamarie

@MelissaHDavis Iโ€™ve always said, I hope Iโ€™m in a Barnes and Noble for the end.

I used to carry a book with me every where I went. Lots of times I still do. Reading is the very best escape.

@CinnamonGirlE @misslovelymess @MelissaHDavis @heyrhiannon @evamarie

Same. I'd read everywhere and all the time.

Mom threatened to ground me from books a few times because I wasn't receptive to being grounded from anything else.

You bet your butts I hid books in every nook and cranny of my bedroom. ๐Ÿ’ช

(Bad grades, I didn't act out much.)

@evistre @misslovelymess @MelissaHDavis @heyrhiannon @evamarie
I can remember wanting to read at the supper table. I loved it, but it wasn't allowed.

After my husband died I kind of lost the voraciousness of reading. It became hard to concentrate. I've found out that's common. I started back this past year with short stores instead of longer novels. I miss it.

I also think I reworked my brain with scrolling during that time,
lol. That's better now too, thank goodness.

@CinnamonGirlE @misslovelymess @MelissaHDavis @heyrhiannon @evamarie

Big hugs!

Perhaps we can get back into reading together. I imagine it gets easier to get absorbed the more you do it.

@CinnamonGirlE @evistre @misslovelymess @MelissaHDavis @heyrhiannon @evamarie

I went through the same fallout when my wife died. I went about two years before I could concentrate enough to read. Never understood that. I'm making up for those lost years now however.

@altucker @evistre @misslovelymess @MelissaHDavis @heyrhiannon @evamarie
My list of TBR is gigantic. Because even though I wasn't reading, I still kept compiling my list and books. That's a good thing. Got plenty waiting for me as I dive back in.
I thought I was losing my mind at first when "couldn't read" I guess I kind of was, lol.

@CinnamonGirlE

Losing concentration is common, along with memory and other cognitive issues. It gets better over time.
We're here. ๐Ÿ’›

@evistre @misslovelymess @MelissaHDavis @evamarie

@evamarie

I've been not watching the news for 20yrs (choosing 'no tv'). it doesn't mean i won't get the news, it just means i don't get as spun around. so, i'm with you
