With all respect to John Rutter, THIS is the finest setting of this carol.

Most of you will know this carol in a modernized, minor-key arrangement. Here it is in its authentic modal, irregular metered glory.

I recommend listening to the traditional harmonization of this carol by Praetorius first, as it is the basis for this piece (see previous reply).

If you have never listened to Bulgarian choral music, you are missing some of the most amazing stuff out there. The vowels are quite a bit brighter than Western ears may be used to, but the laser-sharp intonation cuts right through to your soul.

So, who else decided to drink a large quantity of vodka tonight and then sight-read some Ravel piano music that might be a bit beyond their skill level?
I got put on the spot at choir rehearsal tonight. Our actual conductor was occupied at the moment, and I was asked by our accompanist to conduct a piece I had only ever sung before, with no prep. It was literally, hey can you come up and conduct this? Oh, and can you sing the opening solo for us now that you're up there?
I didn't make a complete ass of myself, and the choir was super attentive and kind, so I'll take that as a win.
