I'm considering grabbing a couple pounds of dry ice on Halloween to make some fog on the table where I will be handing out my candy in the driveway.

Anything I should know ahead of time? I'm well that it will give you severe frostbite if not handled properly and must be kept in an unsealed container.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. A fog machine rental is way more then I want to spend just to entertain the neighborhood kids when I don't have any kind of display otherwise. I was considering the dry ice because it's only about $5/lb.

@voltronic if it's just fog you want you could use a fog machine. Less chance for mishaps.

@voltronic Basically, wear gloves, don't breathe the vapor, make sure no one can touch it where you set it up.

Given how much I paid last time I got dry ice, might want to consider a little fog machine instead. They're pretty cheap now.

@voltronic the warmer the water you put it in the stronger the reaction. So a small container without a warmer will often poop out shortly into use. For dry ice fog effects in stage craft they have big barrels with heating elements in them. If you don't have any kind of warmer to use just make a point to change out the water for warmer periodically to keep the effect going

@voltronic

The fog looks especially nice when it’s back lit with colored light.

@voltronic

You can rent a small fog machine for about $50, + the juice for another $25.

@voltronic 👍 The advice you've already been given covers the bases.

I'll just add that when we were kids we played with dry ice once every month for years and never had a mishap. The nearest full-fledged grocery store was 2 hours away, so my parents brought home the perishables with dry ice.

Have fun! And Happy Halloween!

@Toni_Walker @voltronic Same here… as kids my parents entertained us with it out out our reach… the fog and a flashlight in back of it was magical!

@always where gloves when handling it, best if it comes wrapped securely in layers of paper. I used to use it when camping over long weekends. Kept the burgers frozen the whole time and the beer ice cold😉 Yeager too!

@voltronic It is likely not going to last as long as you like or get you the volume you want (fog machine will) — do a test run, stage productions use a large amount; the comments about a heated water (and heating element) are spot on and get you more fog. You might try a cauldron — anchor some glow sticks, fill with warm/hot water; put a bit of dish detergent in it, drop in dry ice. This with bubble and froth, each bubble filled with “smoke” that releases when it bursts. Safe to pop.
