General statement because some of the comments are referencing the ship's pilot.

The ship was being piloted by a harbor pilot.

Harbor pilots work for the port authority. They specialize in navigating that particular port.

Things can still go wrong, because floating skyscrapers, but it means you can cross off lack of familiarity with the route.

@Pitizenlyn yeah, but it wasn't SUPPOSED to move. I don't know if 'falling into the water' counts....

Alas.

fyi: if you see a news brief of something else that refers to the mv Dali striking the FSK Bridge as an "allision" that is actually the correct term.

At sea, a collision is when two moving objects strike each other, and an allision is when a moving object strikes an immovable object, like a bridge or a dock.

And that is the end of your mini info dump for the day. ;)

@OldDeckHand yep, the power going out - twice - plus the mayday calls and tossing the port anchor out to try to stop is def a medical emergency.

not.

coworker who basically lives in a bunker thinks that the bridge collapse in Baltimore was on purpose and is the fault of the current administration.

@TwiHusband but....Atheists are not Satan-worshippers. They are *atheists*.

Atheists don't believe in God OR gods, or other deities. Satan would be a deity.

The amount of stupid is great.

Oh, so a possible reason for the reduction in bond and the time extension is that the court was getting death and bomb threats.

Great. I can see that sanity is no longer an option.

Sheesh.

@ceor l very much enjoy Kurlansky's books. My first exposure to him was the audiobook of "Salt", read by one of my fav narrators, Scott Brick. I think I have picked up most of his works, but I see one I haven't read yet: "Paper"!!
