General statement because some of the comments are referencing the ship's pilot.
The ship was being piloted by a harbor pilot.
Harbor pilots work for the port authority. They specialize in navigating that particular port.
Things can still go wrong, because floating skyscrapers, but it means you can cross off lack of familiarity with the route.
This ship had two harbor pilots on board, It takes years of training so often there is an older one and a younger one. THIS WAS NOT PILOT ERROR !
My guess it was the harbor pilot that sent mayday, to stop traffic on bridge.... which saved lives.
Yep, absolutely. They know the harbor and the lanes inside and out.
That was in response to the folks wondering if the pilot made a mistake, thinking it was the ship's captain at the time of impact.
Oh, and let's mark age off the list.
Dali is a 10 year old ship. Container ships have a 20-30 year lifespan.
Maintenance is a separate conversation, but it was old enough it wasn't a lemon off the line and young enough it wasn't scrap material.
