@LanaB we dodged a bullet when COVID turned out not to be too deadly to children. If RFK Jr's agenda takes hold, we're gonna see the return of the deadliest disease for children in the 20th century: measles. Estimates put the number of worldwide deaths at 200M in the 1900s. Maybe when their Gen Alpha and younger kids start dying in droves, the MAGAts will finally wake up. Unfortunately, our kids/grandkids may have to get underground vaccinations. MAGA will blame it on immigrants.

@sentientdessert this is an excellent write-up. In some ways, a lot of tuned in people on the left have been saying this for a while but they do not have the audience or the reach to have made much of a difference. The Internet is a helluva thing. All this cord cutting in the last decade actually increases division as well. Those who are no longer watching cable channels are watching and reading content that is algorithmically curated to fool them and generate fear, the strongest emotion.

@codeWhisperer I'm using Windscribe's R.O.B.E.R.T. to blackhole all social media sites and then whitelisting as necessary. After 35 years of being a computer scientist and avid technologist I am more and more of the mind that social media and the Internet in general has begun to tip the scales *against* humanity rather than advancing the moral landscape. On balance, we're still a bunch of selfish, easily manipulated beings who've done some amazing things but not nearly enough.

@feloneouscat there is something to be said about the idea that the right wing (and adjacent dis/misinfo profiteers) owns the largest share of the audio/video podcast and mass social mediasphere (like X). Bryan Tyler Cohen has been talking about this for a while. If shitty speech and ideas can only be countered by overwhelming truth and positivity, then Democrats need to go into the lions' dens as often as possible so as to have a chance at shaping the narrative.

@dietotaku @S_r_stone @LauraWalkerKC Israel has only become more pluralist over time. I agree that the settlements are ridiculous but the territories have nothing to do with pluralism. The right of return of millions of Palestinians would demographically destroy Israel as assuredly as the wars they defended against. People of all faiths are allowed to live and worship freely in Israel. 20% of the citizens are Arabs, many of whom identify as Palestinians.

@S_r_stone @LauraWalkerKC what they should have done is said outright: we continue to support Israel because they share our values regarding democracy and pluralism. There is no attempt at genocide or ethnic cleansing. The Palestinians have the right to self determination but that does not include the destruction of a sovereign nation with its own rights. And if you're thinking of voting for the other guy, just know that he won't even *try* to pressure Bibi, he will give him carte blanche.

@S_r_stone @LauraWalkerKC I mean, of all the shit going on in the world, Ukraine, civil wars, totalitarian regimes killing their people, truly genocidal terrorist groups and "progressive" protestors focus almost exclusively on the situation in Gaza. I'm not advocating for whataboutism, only for perspective. The Arab world and Iran (and all their terrorist proxies) have been trying to destroy Israel in every way possible since the founding. What did people really expect?
