I'm not bribing my kids to make them do chores. I'm ensuring they understand they should be fairly compensated for their time and labor by paying them in Pokemon cards. There's a difference.

Pokemon cards work because I can get a box for 25,000won that has enough cards that the individual cards work out to 15cents/card. Five cards aren't much money, but they bring immeasurable joy and excitement. And it's what my kids want anyway.

The kids have regular family chores, like everyone else, that they do as part of helping the family. They also get a monthly spending allowance so they can practice shopping and budgeting. The Pokemon card chores are bonus chores that I could do but don't want to.

@LianaBrooks pretty much the same here. Son has regular chores he’s expected to do as part of the family. Anything he does outside that he is compensated for.

@Cryspeg And it works! So well that I haven't learned how to use the dishwasher in the new house. :)

@LianaBrooks washing dishes is one job son won’t do. I’ve been washing dishes over 40 years and so sick of it. I’m praying for disposable cooking pots.

@Cryspeg The 13yo with sensory issues hates dishes but will if provided with gloves and Pokemon cards. Usually the older two do it with minimal complaint. When they leave... I'll have less dishes to wash and I'll do it? Maybe?
My husband did them before the kids did.

@LianaBrooks sensory issues may be son’s problem, he’s autistic. I know paper towels almost make him run to the hills. Guy pal has actually made me do all the dishes before I was hospitalized lol.

@Cryspeg o.0
I assume Guy Pal's arms were in casts and you couldn't get the gloves over them to make them water safe.

@LianaBrooks lmao he really really hates dishes. He will throw up the entire time he’s washing. He’s done them 4 times in 27 years.

@LianaBrooks not much I can do. He’s almost 70, set in his ways.

@Cryspeg 70 isn't dead.
If you're alive, you can change.
But, if you're happy with it, there's no problem.

@LianaBrooks

When I was young,
we had a cork board in the kitchen,

Three kinds of chores.
1. Mandatory
2. Extra to earn money, but optional.
3. Fun, bigger project ideas to do that we did not get paid for. But were actually fun and required cooperation with an adult.

@corlin Your parents were fantastic. Well done, them.

@LianaBrooks My parents paid me an allowance with amounts assigned to chores. Peers' parents were apalled! But I already had money management skills fresh out of high school that it took them years to catch up to.

@weirdfizz We have some chores that are just Families Help Each Other chores, but once the kid is 14 they have a bank card and monthly money they can use to learn to shop and budget. If they want to save up for something, they can.

@weirdfizz But that's exactly why we do it. I want them comfortable with thinking about money, budgeting, and spending before they leave home.
