I just heard a truly excellent rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner performed at a professional sporting event. The best I've heard in a long time, actually. No ridiculous embellishments, just straight ahead and respectful, and sung by a man who is clearly a professional tenor. So refreshing.

Oh, did I mention that this was in Edmonton?

Thank you, Canada, for being so respectful of our Anthem. I hope more Americans will follow your example.

This is still one of the most satisfying pieces I've ever played, as much as it kicked my ass to learn it. Please read the description for details.

Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Sonata No. 6
Sviatoslav Richter - 1960 (Live in Carnegie Hall)

I feel like this song becomes more relevant every day. Sadly.

THIS is what I am talking about, when I tell students that there is no other feeling like making music in large groups.

Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
Rufus Wainwright + 1500 Singers

I just bought myself the new professional audio recording deck I've been eyeing for months, and was just released this weekend. I totally deserve it.

32-bit floating point means I'll never have to set levels or use safety tracks ever again. I'm always either conducting or performing in addition to recording, so this makes my job so much easier.

Teaching God Bless America to my students today, and I'm finding that all Kate Smith performances have been scrubbed from the net. I understand the recent discovery of the movie she was in with Paul Robeson, but I'm trying to teach historical context here.

I always like to play students the 1938 Armistice Day world premiere radio performance where she does the intro section usually omitted today with its isolationist lyrics.

At least I found an early score.

This one is VERY complex, and highly evocative. Would love to sing it sometime.

Another one of Moses Hogan's best:

Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho - arr. Moses Hogan

Recording quality isn't the best here, but the interpretation is authoritative.
