Stop what you're doing, and listen to this. If you aren't emotionally moved by the time you're 3 minutes in, then you are made of stone.

This is a choir I will be following closely.

Tuks Camerata - Indodana (Traditional IsiXhosa Arr. Michael Barrett and Ralf Schmitt)

I am convinced that most modern Christmas arrangements for orchestra and chorus are written by people who don't give a flying F about the chorus parts. The high tessituras are almost as painful as the horrible counterpoint.

This is still one of the most satisfying pieces I've ever played, as much as it kicked my ass to learn it. Please read the description for details.

Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Sonata No. 6
Sviatoslav Richter - 1960 (Live in Carnegie Hall)

This one is VERY complex, and highly evocative. Would love to sing it sometime.

Signs of the Judgement - arr. Mark Butler
Oakwood University Aeolians

Another one of Moses Hogan's best:

Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho - arr. Moses Hogan
The Moses Hogan Singers

Recording quality isn't the best here, but the interpretation is authoritative.

Elijah Rock - art. Moses Hogan
Moses Hogan Chorale

I've loved this one since I first sang it in high school. This performance gets it so right, and WOW that soloist!

Ain't Got Time To Die - arr. Hall Johnson
Rev. Ernest Davis, Jr. & the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir

Your introduction to Spirituals should begin with this entire album, by the incredible St. Olaf Choir.

(because I absolutely consider this genre American art music)

This is an important read, .

Why Is American Classical Music So White?

Antonin Dvorak predicted that American classical music would draw from African American traditions. A new article wonders why American classical music has remained so white.
