@Brisse I have to look for a local supplier. I know of several sawmills near Charlotte so need to take a few field trips. Now that I've done a couple large pieces, I feel like I'm ready to do many more. 😃

Florida is a bit too far afield for me, though.

@Brisse Looks like it will make an awesome bowl, but personally I'm gonna need a *lot* more experience with my coring rig before I spend that much on a bowl blank!

Well, it took us nearly 40 years but the wife and I finally have the house to ourselves for the holidays. Problem is, at this age our idea of a romantic evening is early dinner and a nap.

Here's something lighthearted for the holiday - John Branyan tells the story of the 3 Little Pigs as you've never heard it. Enjoy!

@Smersh Thanks! Before I had the coring rig the only way to make a large bowl was to turn 90% of the wood to shavings. I am SO glad I invested in that tool.

today is a set of two nested bowls and a decorative hollow form. First time using my coring rig and all of these are from the same piece of wood. Original piece of wood was 40+ lbs & without the coring rig, the two smaller pieces would be shavings at this point.

Red cedar. Hollow form has a walnut burl inlay and the top is purple heart.

Large bowl is 10.5x6 inches. Small bowl is 8.75x4.25". The hollow form is 3x3" + 1.5" for the lid.

@CJLavoie Thanks! I keep forgetting to hashtag more here.

Hey Cosonauts - I use the Brave browser and CoSo complains about "an overly aggressive ad blocker". Anyone know if there are site-specific settings I can adjust to make CoSo happy with Brave?

On "Improv dinner night" I whip something up from whatever is to hand.

Tonight I flash-seared some salmon, then poached it the rest of the way in a creamy wine sauce with sliced carrots and baby bellas.

Wife: This is amazing! Where'd you find the recipe?

Me: In the fridge.

She's no longer threatening to leave me.

@Moxitude Is it you that's proud, or is it your alter ego? 😅

Sorry, couldn't resist.

The funniest thing about Rockler marketing is it parodies itself. The artificial urgency of this being the last possible day to save on Black Friday deals, when Black Friday is 8 days out, is hilarious on its own. But to receive the mailed flyer on the same day is ROTFL worthy.

Wife from kitchen: [mumble]

Me: Speak up! Did you say we are out of time?

Wife: Yes.

Me: Did we have an appointment today?

Wife: No.

Me: Are you leaving me?

Wife [louder now]: No, you idiot, but I'm considering it! THYME. T. H. Y. M. E. We are out of thyme.

Me: Oh. Pretty sure we have parsley, sage AND rosemary, though.

Wife: OK, now I *am* leaving you.

And now, quite possibly, some of you as well. You're welcome. Or perhaps I apologize. Which of these depends on your prior level of esteem for the service.

Wife asked if I'd ever heard of "chowder bait," which I assumed had something to do with getting the wait staff to show up with corn/potato-based soup.

On further discussion it turns out that Chaturbate was mentioned in some podcast. She wanted to know more but Google wasn't returning any information on it the way she spelled it.

The end result of this - and I verified by going to the site - is that the mere sight of the word Chaturbate now makes me laugh uncontrollably.

I said "I'm gonna finish this bowl today if it kills me." The bowl said "Challenge accepted."

I haven't posted#hotoffthelathe pix lately because I shattered this bowl last week, justifying my face shield expense. In the kintsugi spirit, I painstakingly glued it back together and completed the shaping today using extra-light cuts over several hours. The glossy Waterlox finish will help hold the glue seams together and minimize movement of the wood over time.

@Beanc Radiant heat. In the summer when it is hotter outside than in, heat radiates inward from the walls so even though the ambient temp is lower than body temp you are warmed by radiant energy. In winter the exterior walls are a heat sink, absorbing any radiant heat landing on them from lights, appliances, etc. Same ambient temp yields drastically different "feels like".

Thank God! Jesus finally got verified on the birdsite. We no longer have to take his identity on faith.
