I just received an email from one of the largest financial clearing hubs in the US recommending that customers not use SSL pier name filtering.
Aside from that feature being an essential part of authentication, they said "pier" like the thing you fish off of, not "peer" as in the remote connection point.
How we still have a functioning global digital transaction infrastructure remains one of the great mysteries of the world.
@MakerWerks I'd ask but since this was escalated I've been told all communications must go through the account manager. So now even the technical discussion is political. I could not make this stuff up if I tried.
@MakerWerks That was my feeling on it. Meanwhile, the vendor has escalated to director-level management for the LOB and Ops. Hello mole hill, meet mountain. There is so much real #itsecurity to work on, I hate getting bogged down in somebody's political theater.
@blissfulthorn If that tracks as predicted, we're so screwed.
Hmmm...used OpenSSL to fetch the certificate of a vendor's #IBMMQ server. Both MQ and OpenSSL use a standard TLS handshake and we are obviously authorized to connect for the MQ interface, but vendor claims using OpenSSL was an "intrusion".
If this is an intrusion I wonder if they'd recognize a real one. SMDH.
@StaceyMiller
a) I do not believe such people actually exist.
b) I believe the marketing dept totally believes such people exist.
c) The marketing dept is very adept at getting fiction published as fact
d) Apologies if I induced PTPSD (Post TP Stress disorder)
e) Condolences on the crappy Instacart (lack of) fulfillment experience
@StaceyMiller Costco will eventually accuse you of being the type of person who would use Kirkland brand toilet paper.
@InvaderGzim I had heard of it. Thanks though. Not sure it applies here because the cracks were filled in whe the piece was still half a log.
Now and then I drop a finished piece and the result might be a kintsugi candidate.
@Brisse And THAT made you give up? Because either way, you crafted something that makes magic happen. That's talent.
Not to mention you may have accidentally stumbled into a more lucrative market.
@Brisse Small turned items are quite a lot of fun! This is Mikey. Ironwood, pins with black plastic heads, and leather.
@Brisse Eek! That's not good! I have a full-face shield and I try to stay out of the line of fire but I guess I'll be extra cautious when I try this. And maybe make the prototype out of balsa. 😀
@LadyZurk I should probably do a controlled trial on some of the off-brand CA glues. I primarily use them for finishing pens and the investment in the blank and kit are enough to keep me from trying a new glue. But if I turn and some scrap wood, not even use a pen barrel or kit, there's no sunk cost to ignore.
@Brisse The Saturn is good for small stuff too! I love making pens, ornaments, and handles for various things. I want to try some "inside-out" ornament turning this year. I shall keep an eye out for your pix. I saw the bowl and cutting board way down in your timeline. Great work! Esp. the bowl.
@singlemaltgirl I suspect for some folks, it could very well be. Though for my daughter, who is a sonographer and manages the imaging dept at a local hospital, I suspect it will be a paperweight. Thing weighs a couple lbs without the handle!
@Brisse Thanks! The trick, I think, is to stay out of both the workpiece throw path and my comfort zone. In this case, by going big. I've turned larger diameter platters but this is the first time I've put a 40 lb chunk of wood on there and spun it at 800 rpm. Planning to core it out twice and try to get a set of 3 nested bowls. Fingers crossed. Results will hit the firehose mid- to late in the week.
@Brisse Full disclosure, I bought several of these from PSI to turn for Christmas gifts. But the gift recipients won't necessarily be proficient in the kitchen. Some of them will just appreciate the name.
That said, I have used meat tenderizer mallets in the past and they have that coarse knurled face. I've never seen or heard of what is essentially a rather large flat hammer face for "pounding meat". It seems like it would splatter everywhere.
@LadyZurk Luckily for me, the Woodcraft and Rockler stores are both within a 30 minute drive. We even have a Klingspor store about 90 minutes away. Like the Woodcraft well enough but the Venn diagram of things the two stock has lots of non-overlapping area. And it's nice to have multiple sources for staple items like CA glue.
I make stuff with code and with wood. Just, you know, not at the same time.
