Please use caution when bringing Twitter nonsense here: QTing stuff to dunk on it ended up being one of the most problematic, toxic elements there. It kept putting people in front of me I'd decided to ignore.
I'll beg if I have to: please, please, please stop fixating on what you want to oppose, and live into what you want to give your energy to, and what you want to celebrate.
I've found that being in a "for" community is much more productive than being in an "against" community.
@sumpnlikefaith I wish more people would do this. Thanks for putting this message out there. I have been trying to do the same.
I have just been blocking with wild abandon those who wish to bring that same vibe here.
@thewebrecluse This instinctive response is so sad to me. It's doing all the wrong things, and not much good.
We need to decompose this -- there *are* nutrients in it, but they're not available in that form.
@sumpnlikefaith I understand the need to decompose ... to shift, to try and shake off, then to find a place to expel it all especially to a bunch of ears you know have probably been through much of the same ... but at the same time ... that blast of rage and anger and whatever else spreads through the space the same way as the place you left behind.
I dunno.
If there is one thing I got tired of before, it was trying to explain such things to people ... I have to just block and move on now.
@thewebrecluse Yep, totally valid. What you are talking about is emotionally exhausting!
I posted what I did -- and am in the flow of lots of people saying similar things -- in an attempt to hopefully pre-emptively fend that off.
I hope it works!
@sumpnlikefaith Yes! So much yes
@sumpnlikefaith
Oh, yes, please. I’m thrilled with our influx of new folks, but have already muted several simply because of twitterish nonsense.
@sumpnlikefaith I certainly agree with this philosophy and adhere to it as well.
You can go into edit profile and then go to filters to add words, names and phrases and filter posts that way. Highly recommend.
@misslovelymess Thank you! Yes, I will absolutely filter if I have to.
I'm personally fairly resilient, so my larger hope here is that we can nurture the good that's been happening on CoSo for the betterment of everyone. :-)
@sumpnlikefaith I’m not blocking at this point because I’m hoping some of the trauma shakes off as people are able to decompress. I didn’t come her years back with guns blazing but I have had to build trust to feel safer. That allowed me to start expressing mySelf more, even though it’s an uphill climb for this little introvert.
Anyway, I guess we’ll see how it settles out over the next days & weeks ahead.
Love to y’all💜
@ATXJane I absolutely want to be in a place that nurtures introverts to find their voice!
Trust is both precious and fragile -- it's a group project that we all need to work on together.
@sumpnlikefaith Tracking right along with you. I think we’ve got this. 🌸
@ATXJane @sumpnlikefaith Really relate to these posts. The atmosphere here is so chill compared to you-know-where. It’s like culture shock… but in a good way!😊
@sumpnlikefaith you’re gonna have to give some of us time.
It takes A LOT of effort to break the programming that the engagement algorithm rewarded us with over there. #TwitterIsAShitBuffet
@JKxZ Right, thanks for that! I keep forgetting about the algorithm component. I never let it change me, but I was never going to be a big account there because of that. Sigh. Tangled web, and all that.
@sumpnlikefaith Pavlov should have never bought a bell.
It’ll get better. Lots of us are used to reacting to sock puppets and bot accounts. I haven’t seen any over here yet.
@JKxZ [shakes head sadly] So true! Serious culture hacking going on all over the place there.
I agree -- it will get better.
@sumpnlikefaith @JKxZ
Bots and socks simply don't exist here. They get nuked from orbit.
@voltronic @sumpnlikefaith @JKxZ
So just remember that everything you say and respond to is an actual living human being..
@sumpnlikefaith needed that reminder, thank you
@jenjavajunky You're welcome! Thanks for being a part of this.
@sumpnlikefaith well said.
This is the way.
@sumpnlikefaith wow. All of this
So glad to have moved away from twitter
Thank you for validating the decision
@dfisman Right?! It's been fascinating to think about how interaction has been conditioned on there.
Being new here and watching even newer people arrive is...quite the experience!
@sumpnlikefaith
Thank you for saying this. It is exactly the spirit of this place, or at least that's what it's been the last 5 years.
@voltronic That's how I read it, and that's what I want to contribute to.
@sumpnlikefaith I’d like my social media to be more positive than negative. Is this the right place to be these days? Because I’m overloaded with the latter right now.
@DoctorGeek I'm new here, so I'll just say this: the amount of affirmation I've received from this toot especially gives me a large amount of confidence that it is.
I wasn't even acutely aware of how much negativity I was immersed in. And I never want to go back to that.
@sumpnlikefaith It could very well be a breath of liberating, positive air.
Lords, we needed this.
This is especially beautiful because jester has told us he wanted to stop breaking things, and start building things instead, and so he built Coso. which goes a lot in line with what you’re saying, @sumpnlikefaith
This goes for the "Fisman Sent Me" hashtag campaign, many of us here are giving this the stinkeye right now.
It's inorganic. People should just look at who's following Fisman.
I'd like to add that none of us has a clue who Fisman even IS, and "Twitter refugee" isn't assisting anyone in assessing that.
This "I HAVE BEEN SENT HERE" stuff, however, IS, and the assessment is not generally a positive one.
This is a lot of people getting off to kind of a bad start in their "new home".
We were already here. There's a culture. When in Rome, don't act like you're in Buffalo.
@mcfate That last line made me laugh out loud! 🙂
I hear you. I haven't been tracking with this particular phenomenon very closely, but there is a whole "Twitter-vibe" that we need to be aware of.
Twitter rewarded irony/sarcasm so heavily that it struggled to deal with sincerity. That's a contrast I see here that's worth protecting.
@sumpnlikefaith @mcfate
I'll be glad when the boost is back to working properly.
We're totally gonna protect it, and people will be ALARMED when they see how THAT shit operates.
@sumpnlikefaith hear, hear! 👍
@sumpnlikefaith so very true 🙏
@sumpnlikefaith I’m for a smarter, more intelligent relationship with our earth and each other. I believe our divisions are like quicksand that hold humanity down and know that if we are going to survive as the first earthly species capable of artificially pushing the earths ecosystem out of balance, we better figure out how to unite, and provide all basic needs for everyone in a balanced way.
1) @sumpnlikefaith yes, this 100%. I understand that we need to be aware of threats to our democracy, we need to point out when actions are being taken that threaten the climate, voting rights, a woman's right to make her own medical decisions, assaults on education and the like. You can care about issues, this stuff is huge and we need to be aware.
2) @sumpnlikefaith Buuuut I don't need to be reminded every day of these actors who exist solely to rile up their base, from Trump to Carlson to Musk. I don't need to know about their latest incendiary comments or idiotic, attention seeking moments. I want to focus on the positive things in this world. I can be aware of the problems and do what I can when there are things that I can do, but I will not fixate on them when I'm unable to act.
3) @sumpnlikefaith And I love that last bit. I much prefer to focus on the things I am for, rather than those I am against.
@sumpnlikefaith that, was very well articulated. Might even recommend pinning that to the top of your posts.
@sumpnlikefaith As they say in improv, adopt a “yes, and…” approach to others, and life in general.
@sumpnlikefaith OMG THis! It's tickles something deep inside us to dunk on something stupid somebody said. I know I'm guilty of it.
In the end, however, you're only giving the stupid thing more reach. There's good science behind the idea that stupid sayings should die quietly. Every time they're repeated (even an as a dunk), they are incrementally normalized deep in everyone's brains. Let the weeds ignorance shrivel and overshadow them with crops of insight.
@sumpnlikefaith good advice
@sumpnlikefaith Thanks for this. It is a relief to think CoSo is a safe space to discuss and share.
May I ask a newbie question about QTing (quoting)? If you want to share a specific toot with another person here -to quote them- how do you do it?
@sumpnlikefaith I agree. Positive vibes are good for the soul. 😊
