Something I have noticed about my US homeowner friends is that they often seem to need to replace their roof!
How long is a roof expected to last over there because the only Brits I've ever known to replace an entire roof are those who've had some catastrophic damage from extreme weather, fire or falling trees.

@chaddus2_0 @stueytheround that’s for your typical comp roofs. There are other materials: shake, metal, terra cotta…

@stueytheround I'm told they use the same roofing felt we use on shed roofs for their house roofs. Or shingles made out of that roofing felt, which seems... worse.

@stueytheround it depends on how much was spent on it.
roofs can be dirt cheap, cheap, ok, wind resistant, hurricane resistant.

@annamousse @stueytheround
I need to repair my roof. New one 25 yrs ago cozt me 5k. This year they want 25k. I may be going brit on this.

@stueytheround One reason I've seen it done is a non leaking or problem roof has to be replaced at its 10 year mark or home owner insurance with drop coverage. I've known two people who had new roofs put on for that reason alone.

@stueytheround depends on the materials. Some shingles don’t last very long, others are good for 30+ years. Metal can last quite a long time.

Many parts of the country here get extreme weather every year which takes its toll. I had to replace 30 year shingles at 3 years because of straight line wind damage/hail. That was only shingles though, not the decking.

@stueytheround Tar shingle on felt/tyvek/? 20-30 years with a lot of variation per weather (USA contends with all sorts). Steel aka tin roof will go 50 years or more. A couple years ago I had mine replaced (tar shingle) on a 40 year old house. The roof was 90% okay but a tree branch had punched a small hole all the way through the wood deck and a skylight had a leak (because skylights do) and I got some Biden energy efficiency money. New shingle has a 50 year warranty, fwiw.

@b4cks4w @stueytheround

Slate roofs last a “lifetime,” but that’s the life of a human, not the life of a house. A tarpaper flat roof maybe 5-10 years, premium materials, 30 years. Sloped roofs last longer. Terra cotta roof tiles become projectiles in hurricanes but are great in fires. Every 3rd time you replace the covering, you probably need to rebuild the wood underneath.

@EileenKCarpenter @b4cks4w
This is incredible to me.
Rooves last dozens or even hundreds of years here with the possible exception of thatching.

@stueytheround

Your roof construction may be different.
Slate roofs last forever.

Asphalt, tin and wood shingles roofs have a much shorter lifespan due to the tempature and insects like termites & carpenter ants.

Most roofs will last 15 to 25 years.

@KathMcGill So my thoughts are why are roofs in the USA deliberately not built to last?

@stueytheround @KathMcGill I only lived in one home that had to have the roof re-tarred for some reason. They only finished part, didn't prepare the rest for rain, and it rained. So above my room was finished, I wake up, open my bedroom door, and it's raining in the hall, and most of the house. A big bubble was forming in our ceiling, full of water, about five feet across. I went to school, that part of the ceiling collapsed, I'm sad I didn't get to see that. Yay, American contractors!

@stueytheround we had a regular shingle roof on our house but had hail damage in 2008. We elected to replace it with a metal roof and I don’t regret that decision! 50 year warranty. No worries now when we get bad storms.
