Something I have noticed about my US homeowner friends is that they often seem to need to replace their roof!
How long is a roof expected to last over there because the only Brits I've ever known to replace an entire roof are those who've had some catastrophic damage from extreme weather, fire or falling trees.

@stueytheround

Your roof construction may be different.
Slate roofs last forever.

Asphalt, tin and wood shingles roofs have a much shorter lifespan due to the tempature and insects like termites & carpenter ants.

Most roofs will last 15 to 25 years.

@KathMcGill So my thoughts are why are roofs in the USA deliberately not built to last?

@stueytheround @KathMcGill I only lived in one home that had to have the roof re-tarred for some reason. They only finished part, didn't prepare the rest for rain, and it rained. So above my room was finished, I wake up, open my bedroom door, and it's raining in the hall, and most of the house. A big bubble was forming in our ceiling, full of water, about five feet across. I went to school, that part of the ceiling collapsed, I'm sad I didn't get to see that. Yay, American contractors!
