What's the hot setup in DNS nowadays? It's been a hot minute since I've checked and thought I'd ask opinions here? Is it OpenDNS, something else?
@mikeflstfi I've been using nextdns.io for a few years, and am really happy with it.
controld.com is also really nice.
@john_b
Thanks. The nextdns.io looks interesting. Will dig into that a little more.
@john_b @mikeflstfi yeah I've been using CTRL-D and really like it
Its really user friendly and the geolocate feature is a bonus

If you want to host everything locally, there's always pi-hole. See my pinned posts.
@mikeflstfi I'm partial to self-hosting my resolver; it's currently a pi-hole without ad-blocking lists enabled (the PI is running on lost three gigs of RAM and now runs with one gig.....)
I'm thinking about switching to AdGuard in a docker container...
@crazyuncleharris
Thanks. From what I'm reading nextdns.io is essentially cloud-based pi-hole, which might be easier for me to set up and work with.
@mikeflstfi Yep, I switched to nextdns after my various self-hosted solutions (pihole, adguard) failed to support my SLAs and my customer (my spouse) got angry that the internet wasn't working.
DNS is kind of critical so I'm happy to outsource that responsibility.
@mikeflstfi Good find!
Humm, looks promising. Interesting analytics and config options. I'll give it a spin for a while too...
@mikeflstfi A couple days with NextDNS, and I'm almost at 250,000 queries! Nearly 6% blocked. Very happy to see it's blocking the constant Amazon traffic from Alexa.
Took about an hour to get it dialed in so I could watch CBS streaming, and had one other commonly used site that didn't work until I allowed a few domains.
I set up separate profiles for each, so I can keep the shields up, and only poke a hole when I want to use those apps.
Thanks again for the pointer!
@kay_dub
It's working well for me, too. No issues have cropped up from using it so far.
I'm giving nextdns.io a try-out. I'll follow up after I've run it for a while. Sign up and set up were very easy. I'm using the free plan right now, but honestly, at US$20 / year I would be comfortable with the paid plan.
