The clean energy supply chain relies on slavery: theguardian.com/environment/20

I hope everyone here is smart enough that this caveat is unnecessary, _but_ the standard energy supply chain is even worse and poses a threat to human life. Between both how the technology operates and global capitalism, it is far worse, but slavery is also bad. Two things can be true.

@john_b And thank you for your testimonial. I am searching for best practices for my sites as well.

Cabin have a handy way of doing analytics without serving up cookies or creating UIDs on the server side: notes.normally.com/cookieless-

Can anyone think of problems with this approach when it comes to user privacy?

With the caveat that, of course, there are _some_ uses of the Web that by their nature need to be protected (e.g. encrypted journalist communications, a message board for vulnerable minorities), but Instagram is not that.

@Coctaanatis 2020 was a presidential election and one where the lone Democrat in Jerkwater, U.S.A. had his vote count, but if you live in a super-Republican Congressional district, you may not be terribly motivated to vote in elections where your candidate has no chance of winning. Certain Republican bases (MAGAts, the elderly) will _always_ vote, even if their preferred candidates will win by landslides, so this seems pretty intelligible to me. I will look into it more. Thanks!

@Coctaanatis The (center-)left wing slept on local elections and judges for far too long and have left these avenues for the far right to gain power. I hope that Democrats are starting to finally understand this.

@MsTrishLynn Sure, but it so far has been unsuccessful. It works for things like fundraising and grifting, but not for actually getting into office. He is a loser and those who follow him are losers.

Officials in Cochise County, Arizona refuse to certify election results, leading to a lawsuit from governor-elect Katie Hobbs: theguardian.com/us-news/2022/n

Their asinine guy feelings may well end up disenfranchising all of their voters and swinging two elections to Democrats.

If your favorite period of The Beatles is the very end (like mine is), you may like this hypothetical final Beatles album, Everest: formidablemag.com/beatles-ever

Maddeningly, the authors point out that 18 tracks could have been included on the album, but only 14 appear for space constraints. They omit what the other four are! (I wrote them and will follow up in case they reveal them.)

Loneliness is an epidemic and we need to discuss it at the national and species-wide scales: compactmag.com/article/no-cure

I hope that you all feel some connection during the holidays and beyond.

@Darnell Gorgeous and in some measure, heartbreaking. I know that Sierra Leone had an awful time in the 1990s and I am very hopeful for their future. I am also personally grateful for you licensing your work CC BY so it can be shared and I will put these media on the Wikimedia Commons.

@elmaxx Agreed: Japan has such a self-contained, fascinating culture and I am so glad that America and Japan have so much cultural exchange, because we are both all the better for it. If you come across anything else about Japanese design, I would love to know more.

On the curious case of Japanese Web design: sabrinas.space/

I have read the earlier piece and have always thought that the Japanese design was a result of typography and fonts, but there is a little more here to consider and some tentative exploration as to why it has persisted.
