There was a famous author (I forgot whom) that stated he didn't know if he could be a hero because he was born too late for WW2/Korean War and too early for Vietnam. He would never see battle.

This young mans sacrifice may have saved Kyiv last night. By blowing that bridge he stopped Russian tanks from entering the city. This is why only Russian special forces and infantry on foot made to the city.

To clarify, "keeping them close" is what you need to do if you don't have empathy. You wouldn't have enough data to act upon - besides espionage.

As you westerners watch the huddled, terrified masses of people in Ukraine, think about your emotional reaction.
Then, think about your emotional reaction to hearing/seeing huddled masses of people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Congo, or Ethiopia.
Are they the same emotions?
If there is any difference, that is your primal tribe speaking to you.

If you cannot empathize with your enemy, you cannot understand him.
If the only way you can understand your enemy is to keep him close, you probably lack the ability to empathize. This is an important trait (lack of empathy) a mobster requires to operate.
