Excerpt continued:

But there’s this other crisis of trust in institutions and people, rapidly catching up with it, that’s the province of Blue America. And Bezos, seemingly on his own not a terribly political person one way or another, has with this one decision stepped right into it, probably without even realizing it. Frankly, I am myself surprised by the intensity of the reaction. But now having seen it I think it makes perfect sense.

[An inflection point for Techno-Bros billionaires maybe?]

An excerpt from a fascinating piece by Josh Marshall at TPM:

Trust, Bewilderment and Billionairedom: Understanding the Backlash Against Bezos

"We talk a lot about a crisis of public trust in America today. But when we do we’re usually talking about Red America or what we might call Disaffected America — people lack trust in the press, in elections, in scientific or expert authority and big institutions.

I share this because lots of encouraging numbers here... but always as good as these numbers are (and this is a quality poll)

VOTE VOTE VOTE !

The irony here is so thick...

Like the isolationist owners of those anti-Semitic papers from the 30s and 40s (The Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Washington TImes-Herald and the Hearst papers) that appeased Hitler. Bezos and the WaPo can now be included in the present day appeasing version of the "Newspaper Axis". Cowardly appeasing fascist Turdmp and giving him incredible power with their *anticipatory obedience*.

* Tim Snyder's term to describe societal obedience to fascism and tyranny.

WaPo book review from May 6, 2022:

The Newpaper Axis by Kathryn Olmsted

"It would be comforting to think that such irresponsible journalism is a historical relic. But the parallels with today’s right-wing media, on both sides of the Atlantic, are unavoidable: displaying apathy or sympathy toward brutal dictators (see Putin, Vladimir), deriding efforts to address legitimate threats (see pandemic, coronavirus) as schemes by liberal elites to control the population."

from Igor Sushko

The American bourgeois class is actively preparing for the contingency of a fascist dictatorship in America by staying silent - obeying in advance.

@EvilBunny

From Timothy Snyder's book "On Tyranny"

LESSON 1: Do Not Obey In Advance

"Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do."

Ok, I snapped my head at this, wait, what?, the NYT ???

The NY Times Editorial Board: “Donald Trump says he will prosecute his enemies, order mass deportations, use soldiers against citizens, play politics with disasters, abandon allies. Believe him.”

Ok. I've got an extra month before I have to be out of my current apartment. So I will be moving in January, and don't have to do it over the holidays.
I could take February, too, but now that I've started getting things in motion, I want to get it done.

@Avidspark

That's a complex cat expression. Pure pleasure, but also I think the cat has decided it's not going to try and eat the human if the human should ever be shrunk down to the size of a mouse. Which is serious cat love ya know...

@POOetryma

Trump accidentally admits he lost the 2020 election! And the momentary look on his face ((his eyes tell it all) when he realizes it is priceless.

It's getting more and more disturbing to listen to him. Every utterance and syllable out of his mouth is deranged and wrong.

That controlling insipid, obsequious tone that makes him sound like a disturbed busy-body, taking *you* into his confidence to spread toxic gossip. It's sick making.

How can anyone take it seriously?

WTAF.

🤢

@MotherDucker

There’s probably not much he could do. The Electoral College is a state thing. BUT, he could talk to the hold-out states in the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) and try to encourage them to join?

If Texas, Florida, and Ohio were to join the NPVIC, they would bring the total to 296 electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed to make the compact effective.

Done.

Other combinations of other states would work too. And it takes effect automagically.

@Agatha

Phew. This is up there with Stewart destroying Tucker Carlson 20 years ago.

This guy does an amazing job of exposing the corruption of Shapiro's selective morality and intellectualism all in the service of diminishing and punching down on those he cannot understand.

HE should mind his own damn business and if he had a shred of integrity and real conviction (to his own morals) he wouldn't be supporting Turdmp.
