@AskTheDevil Yes, I think it is a kind of defense mechanism. Conspiracy theories are a way to give order to the disordered. Things don't *just happen,* they're all planned, and all badness has to have been imposed.
@AskTheDevil Although other period instrument groups surely perform it, Hogwood's is the only recording I have - and sadly he died some years ago.
@AskTheDevil Individual tastes will vary.
@Graci Oh, yes. That's a big part of it. The post-Romantic crawl one normally hears is totally wrong.
Pachelbel's Canon is one of the most hackneyed classical pieces, schlocked to death by syrupy modern performances totally alien to its original style and context.
But played as it was intended to be played on the kinds of instruments Pachelbel knew, it's a totally different piece - i.e., the one Pachelbel actually wrote and the one that was originally admired.
@LiberalLibrarian Most people would miss the reference, of course.
@LiberalLibrarian Well, yes... I was paraphrasing Dred Scott.
@LiberalLibrarian The late Justice Byron White would have loved that law. He always went out of his way to assert that a child had no rights an adult was bound to respect.
John Kenneth Galbraith was once asked what JFK's greatest mistake was. Without a moment's hesitation, he answered "Byron White."
@LiberalLibrarian I've never used the app. And I won't try Threads until you don't need an app.
@LiberalLibrarian Broadly speaking.
@TrueBloodNet And yes, it could trace to the concussion. But even if it does, that would suggest he needs more aggressive medical intervention. And if that's what's happening, he needs to have a doctor inform the public.
@TrueBloodNet There were reports it had happened at least once before that, yes.
@Redskye572 Absolutely. And the public has a right to know the results and the prognosis.
@TrueBloodNet I have no idea if he's had the sense to get a proper diagnosis or if he's dodged the doctors. God knows I've known far too many people who'd do the latter in the same situation.
But yes, this is a matter of immediate public concern. He can't be in that position and keep it private.
@SentinelOfTruth Understood. 👍
My only response - for now - to the latest McConnell mini-seizure (or whatever exactly it is) is that he needs a full medical workup and a transparent diagnosis - for his own sake, for his constituents, and for the country.
It's entirely possible this is something that should lead to resignation. But first, there has to be information. If it's something treatable or manageable for now, fine. But it's happened at least twice now, and there have to be answers.
@SentinelOfTruth When I talk here or elsewhere about right-wing agitation, I get both "ignore it, you're giving them exactly what they want by getting worked up about it" and "you're not taking it seriously enough" responses.
@SentinelOfTruth I don't dismiss the risk of them sparking violence... because they already have, and will continue to do so.
But I don't think individual stunts like Rudy's courtroom whining are more than one more piece in their massive campaign of base brainwashing.
Center-left academic type. Generally pissed about the state of the world but I know none of our endless crises are actually new because I'm a historian.
