Pachelbel's Canon is one of the most hackneyed classical pieces, schlocked to death by syrupy modern performances totally alien to its original style and context.

But played as it was intended to be played on the kinds of instruments Pachelbel knew, it's a totally different piece - i.e., the one Pachelbel actually wrote and the one that was originally admired.

@Graci Oh, yes. That's a big part of it. The post-Romantic crawl one normally hears is totally wrong.

@RationalLeft Finally got to listen. I thought they were going to run away when the violins came in! And this reminded me that I hated the pizzicato arpeggios that showed up, I think with Paillard,

@RationalLeft I like the modern versions of the piece just fine. I think because it is sweet, though, some renditions are presented in a saccharine manner that can offend those who seek sincerity.

I do agree this really allows the original spirit to come through.

How lovely.

@RationalLeft It is a lovely piece, on its own. I like the version posted very much. That would be worth hearing again in person.

@AskTheDevil Although other period instrument groups surely perform it, Hogwood's is the only recording I have - and sadly he died some years ago.
