Ford Motor co. just filed a patent "for an in-vehicle advertisement presentation system based on information derived from several trip and driver characteristics.

malwarebytes.com/blog/news/202

Essentially, the car you’re driving would not only spy on your driving behavior, your present and future locations, and your requested driving routes, but it would also eavesdrop on you. And let’s not forget the safety implications of displaying advertisements while you’re driving.

@NorthernInvader nothing says consumer culture like this does

people's lives in the first world are centered on consumption; thinking we have choice when we're the product

lol

@Zevon Car ownership is going in the direction of you can only lease one which then gives the manufacturer more control over how you use it.

While you can still pay the MSRP or sale price in many place, with greater frequency dealerships will only "sell" you a car if you finance it over x years which then increases their profit. If you can't pay cash then you might as well lease as by the time the loan term runs out most will want a new vehicle. Consumerism writ large

@NorthernInvader how is Ford the first to try for this? I mean, it’s shitty, but seems like any number of other orgs would have already thought of it and filed for a patent.

@MookyTroubadour

Good question!

Perhaps thr driver needs to insert a rectal probe before starting the car?? LOL. 🤣

Not to mention every app on cell phone with location privileges is already clocking / saving that data.

@NorthernInvader

@TheAbbotTrithemius

You can always turn your phone off,or set it to DND, or delete an app. With this once you turn the engine on you have no options it seems.

It’s messed up what corporations think they have a right to ask for now. I think a couple of years ago one of the mattress makers wanted to mic their mattresses for eerrrr… performance improvements. I don’t think that worked out for them, thankfully. 🤦🏻‍♂️

@MookyTroubadour

@MookyTroubadour Could be others are working on it and wil file their own applications soon.

@NorthernInvader

A very good reason for everyone to own a bike or e-bike and for state and town invest in excellent public transportation systems!

And for NOT driving / owning / leasing such
Nosy vehicles and companies who should MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS.

@NorthernInvader So it'll basically do what the rest of the internet is already doing.

Coolcoolcool.

@kel except it is going to show you those ads, on the screens that are getting ever larger and more visually intrusive, while you are driving, thus creating a traffic hazard.

@NorthernInvader People keep looking at whether this or that product or service from a company is good or not, but to me, the important part is whether the company is good or not.

When we allow corporations to just do whatever they want, and reward them with money, they'll keep doing it.

@NorthernInvader I think this may be one of those corporate ideas that dies in practice.

@danielbsmith one can hope, but rentier capitalism is very much in growth mode. Tesla and other EVs are good examples - if you want certain features you have to rent them and if you don't keep up payments the manufacturer can turn them off, even if that makes your car unusable.
