Awwwww.
Now we just have to hope that @Mauve_matelot stays on the side of the superheroes! 😳🤞
Alas, it's very logical!
Ciclo (from cycling) + vía (route/way)
But I get it - if you pronounce it the way English syllable preference suggests (ci-CLO-via) it sounds like a pharmaceutical prescription, to be followed with a list of possible side effects. 😉
Try saying it as it's pronounced in Spanish, with that accent as a clue!
see-clo-VEE-ah. :)
Ho ho! That is QUITE a power. 😅 And I love the change-up with family order, instead of the spurned younger son.
Do you have a Kryptonite? An Achilles' heel? 🤔 Maybe the power doesn't work on Sundays?
I have two hours of reading to do, to prep for tomorrow's BookTube review of the latest Asimov's.
While I'm "under", #RandomQuestions:
If you were a supervillain, what would your origin story be, and your superpower of choice? 🤔
I love living vicariously through others!
We all only have one precious life - but look how far that life can go when we live it together. :)
Thanks for sitting with it, Stephen!
I think most places have their characters, but not everyone gets the same *collisions* between worlds where they live - and that can make all the difference!
And yet, you'd love it here! Four months of Christmas!
The festive cakes are out now. :) And people will happily buy and eat them without complaining that it's "too early".
🫂♥️ What a frustratingly low bar - but also, pretty much the best we can hope for from the world most days, eh?
I'm so thankful that you hold firm to what makes you YOU. Not without times when it's tested! But still, when you're attacked or suppressed, you know *what* is being attacked or suppressed. And that's a hell of a lot better than many who go their whole lives without the self-awareness to realize what's been taken, or what they've been taught to steal from themselves. 🔥
That's the thing, though. Unlike other Marvel outings, this was a fairly standalone series. It helped to know Wandavision, but Marvel usually can't help but introduce a whole ton of throwaway superhero cameos, & yet this time... it didn't! It just let this unexplored body of witchlore play out in a self-contained storyline (won't spoil the ending) that relied on tightly nested scripting, great actors, and maybe the best song in the whole universe.
My second year here, I was stunned by a Guardian article describing a local protest as all about FARC - which seemed to be the only way Western news knew how to talk about Colombia.
The piece was ridiculous; local news plainly covered the concerns of students & workers worried about the gov't entering private-public contracts that would cut jobs, pension plan changes, & rising energy costs for middle-class homes.
But the idea that Colombians are just people seemed *so hard* to grasp.
So that's a sentence that's never going to leave my brain. 🙃
It's a dangerous thing!
Especially when they don't come with their own crash helmets. :/
I love that I just tried to write about a slice of this concept in a more delicate way with my latest Patreon post, but I 100% vibe more with the whole #mood of this thread, which sums it up so much more succinctly and forcefully. Thank you for your VOICE. ❤️💪❤️
Oh! You know what's better than one franchise? A whole marketplace's worth!
We'll capture more market share if we can get them to gamify their own anxieties and pit them against each other. It's all the same abstraction at the end, but if we get folks worried about having the *right* branding for their abstract comfort, we can leverage their fear of the other for even greater profit and political influence.
I mean, all for the betterment of our species in the end, I'm sure...
Oh! This is a great idea!
But can we get someone to come down for a bit from the abstract realm, and explain how it works for us? We don't need him for long - three decades or so should do! And then we'll get a dozen or so *other* people to try to record what he said, so we don't lose track of how it's all supposed to fit together.
Gosh, can you imagine how tough this whole "abstract comfort" business would be if we humans were the sort to over-complicate everything?
All right, loves.
I meant to post this yesterday, but I think the extra time to let it all percolate was useful.
Here, I talk about volunteering in #SFF, challenges for industry practice, and the importance of balancing everything we do within our literary communities with the broader work of Being Human - work that sometimes requires us to remember there's still a lot of privilege packed into even the most stressful crises in industry we might face.
