The next book in my six-book year will be a second edition of Tomás Carrasquilla's stories, with additions to my supporting materials, out March 4. Most found the work in the first edition fascinating, but some were unsettled by cultural differences. I'm glad to sharpen how I introduce another culture to Anglo-Western readers. There's just *so* much to learn about translation as we go!

Most of my writing time these days is for translation, which is a deep-dive delight filled with tidbits most people won't care about IN THE SLIGHTEST. 😅

Sometimes it's figuring out how to translate wordplay. Other times, deciding when to keep regional terms with slight additions to help readers intuit their meaning.

But my fave part? Being reminded that there's a *whole* Spanish canon of lit & history references English readers don't know, & figuring out how to bridge the gap. 👌

Tonight something special arrived. 🙂

I've *never* held a published book of my creation before.

Is it self-published? Yep! The industry's not always ready for our labours of love, and the translation community wasn't interested.

But still a joy. And good timing too, after my first day's work on the next, Tomás Carrasquilla's most famous novel! 🇨🇴🥳

So what did I do? 🤔 Baked a celebratory loaf of course! To share with neighbours this week. 👌

Okay! 🙂 The first half of July was fairly fiction-focused, as I wrote stories & sent them into queues.

But now I'm switching gears. Going to try to write more for OnlySky, but that's only part of it. My main task for the rest of July is diving into a book-length translation project. In April I published the first English translation of a famous-in-Colombia author's stories, & now I'm working on his most popular novel.

Lots of fun dialect challenges ahead! 😊

I don't see hashtags for a few communities of interest to me, so I might as well get the conversation started. I'm a , and I write about at . I'm also a , and my current work in involves the novels and short stories of a classic Colombian writer (nope, not that one! there are others!). Any other humanists about? Or translators?
