Hello all.

Still taking a break, but I thought I'd hop on to regale you with my latest health travesty.

Last night I accidentally bit my tongue. No biggie, right? Wrong. Two hours later my tongue was swollen. Two hours after that I tell my wife to take me to the ER. By then everything in my mouth was swollen. Then I was admitted to a room for observation. They think that my Lisinopril is what caused the swelling from the bite. So, change of BP meds, and I'm going home now after dinner.

@JohnRadcliff Swelling's pretty much gone. Getting sent home with a four day course of prednisone.

@LiberalLibrarian Oh my gosh! ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ I'm glad you're OK, so sorry that happened.

@LiberalLibrarian

Have you been on it long ( I just picked my rx up - same med ) going to be super careful not to bite my tongue. I'm freaked out for you!

@KazzyH It's very rare for this to happen. I just pulled the short straw.

@KazzyH But yes, you should definitely talk to your doctor about the risks of ace inhibitors and angioedema.

@LiberalLibrarian

I've been on it for years and we always discuss possibilities. I wish I could get away with nothing.

@LiberalLibrarian

I'm glad they quickly figured it out and. Wishing you a speedy and smooth recovery.

@LiberalLibrarian
Holy shit. Sending massive healing love.

BP meds are bastards, btw. I was on Hydralazine in an uneventful way for a bit. Then I ran a low-grade fever for eight months straight and it took a shitton of figuring out to pin that fever on the Hydralazine.

@LiberalLibrarian

Well, that ain't good. Glad they figured it out quickly.

I'll echo @publickovacs : BP meds are a double edged sword. Yes, they keep your BP down, but they do all sorts of other things as well. I was on Metoprolol for a while and thought that my lung disease was rapidly progressing since I spent half my waking hours gasping for air. Nobody seemed to have realized before prescribing it to me that you really shouldn't give beta-blockers to people with compromised lungs....

@BenA
O. M. G. I am so sorry - it makes me mad when meds are prescribed without sufficient care

@LiberalLibrarian

@LiberalLibrarian

pharmaceuticals ๐Ÿ˜‘

i avoid them like the plague. my doctor tried to get me to take BP meds. nope. it's not that bad.

and, as my dad used to say, we've all gotta go sometime.

i prefer the risk to the side effects of those meds.

end of rant.

@LiberalLibrarian Thatโ€™s a surprise no one wants. Itโ€™s good to hear youโ€™re okay and heading home soon. Sending hugs ๐Ÿค—

@LiberalLibrarian Whoooa. Thatโ€™s bananapants! That stuff made me dry hack constantly like a two pack a day smoker. My doc was all โ€œOh yeah. The Pril cough. It happens.โ€ That is wild, but Iโ€™m glad theyโ€™re fixing you up.

@Avalea @LiberalLibrarian I had the cough on lisinopril. As soon as I mentioned ir to my doc he moved me to another med.

@SimplyZippy @LiberalLibrarian Yep! Same. Knew immediately what it was. Such a weird side effect!

@SimplyZippy @Avalea Again, it's only hitting me now that I could very well have unalived myself if I hadn't gone to the ER.

@LiberalLibrarian @SimplyZippy Iโ€™m so glad you went too. Very glad indeed. Hope today has been better.

@LiberalLibrarian

HEEY LL๐Ÿ˜Š Continuing PRAYERS๐Ÿ™ As U Return 2 Normal Health.๐Ÿ˜Š May It Be Soon๐Ÿ˜Š

BLESSINGS๐Ÿ’š

@LiberalLibrarian Wow! Glad to hear you're all right. That's scary (and gonna tell hubby don't bite your tongue!)

@LiberalLibrarian omg that sounds scary!! glad you went to the ER

@Museek @LiberalLibrarian Yikes. I had no idea that was a potential side effect of Lisinopril. Glad you were seen and meds switched. Hope you're feeling better!

@Notokay @Museek @LiberalLibrarian
It can happen after years of taking it with no problem. It can be triggered by stuff like dental work. It can turn a cold with a cough into symptoms like whooping cough, too. Whatever area of your airway gets swollen tends to always recur the same way if you keep taking it, too -- people with cough don't get tongue or lip swelling, for instance.

@AlphaCentauri @Museek @LiberalLibrarian Fantastic /s. I get reactive asthma already, so nice to have something else to be nervous about. Seriously, I appreciate the heads-up.

@Notokay Yep, I was on it for 5 years, and then BAM. Now, this only happens to 1% of users. But that's enough of a risk. @AlphaCentauri @Museek

@LiberalLibrarian @Notokay @Museek
Nobody knows the cause. It's not really related to asthma or allergies.

The drugs called "ARBS" (valsartan, telmisartan, losartan, etc.) have the same benefits, don't do the sudden swelling thing, and are all generic and inexpensive now, so not so many people get started on lisinopril.

@AlphaCentauri @LiberalLibrarian @Museek That's very interesting and good to know. I have been on lisinopril for two years at this point. I will ask my doctor.

@GrandmaJ Check my timeline. I posted an article about ace inhibitors and angioedema. Fewer than 1% of people on them have the reaction I had. I'm so special. Heh.
