I didn't hear the conversation because they were eating by the pool while I was still in the kitchen. But my daughters were listening. They heard my mother say, "Oh, ...... does all the cooking, while Chippy just cooks the vegetables."

My daughters were aghast and thinking, "Oh no she didn't!" But she did.

So just a reminder to all.. be grateful. A lot of hard work goes into planning and appeasing everyone's requests (read: demands).

I was thinking earlier today about the time when.. I planned a family reunion in the OBX, made reservations which included specialty amenities, bought all the food, got everything ready for the kids and myself. Prepared the food, Washed dishes and laundry. Cleaned the 3-story house. This happened yearly for a decade.

One dinner, my husband was grilling steaks while I cooked everything else. My brother who arrived just in time for dinner said to my mother, "This tastes great, who cooked?"

I was in undergrad from 1985-1989. My dad was an engineer and my mom a school teacher. Their combined income was less than $50,000. Too much for financial aid. I worked full time at $4/hr and was able to afford my tuition and housing at a SUNY school w/o a student loan.

Three of my kids attend public college in Virginia. it is $33K per year in state! Undoable at even $15/hr!
Even trade schools are costly and many require loans.

It's an unsustainable model.
