Blocking someone over mild disagreements is a symptom of social media trauma.

Too many people have been victims of targeted online harassment, or have found themselves in communities where members are frequently combative and purposely hurtful in their posts.

It stands to reason that people who have experienced this are defensive. But if you block everyone who disagrees with you, then you have constructed an echo chamber.

We can disagree yet still be kind to each other. Give it a chance.

@voltronic I block for very specific reasons, and it's seldom permanent.

Gaslighting, being a dickhole, deliberately misconstruing what I'm saying, etc., will get you airlocked, and I won't feel bad about it in the slightest. No one should.

People are like flavors. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@voltronic I don’t block over disagreements but I block quite a lot. I feel that similar to irl, there are some red flags that make me question good faith engagement, or people I don’t want digging around on my profile. Doesn’t necessarily mean they have bad intent, and it’s likely a result of being stalked irl, but having and using the tools help me feel safe. I’m sure there are some privacy settings I could change to lock my profile up, but I find this works for me.

@misslovelymess @voltronic

So blocking someone doesn’t involve putting them in your trunk?

Back in a sec.

@voltronic - Somewhere along the line, people forgot the golden rule of trolling: ignore them. There are/were way too many people on Twitter and elsewhere wasting their breath yelling at them. Especially with Trump.

@esaeger @voltronic Exactly! Don’t throw snacks under the bridge!

Also, I only block a few very specific things. I don’t feel the need to argue with people. Ignoring and depriving the fire of oxygen works just fine. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Lemon405 @voltronic - All the response to trolls was really unnatural. I think people made it too big a part of their online presence, like all some accounts ever did was hurl insults at MAGA figures in order to get Likes and retweets and stay in good standing with their buddies. It really put the kibosh on mature debate. Pardon my cynicism but that's my take.

@esaeger @voltronic I consider this place my decompression chamber. I’m excited to be able to chat, discuss, laugh, share info, etc. The other place is really just an uncivilized mess with a few news articles tossed in. I will miss a few accounts, but we have cats, dogs, birds, nature photography etc here too.
I have to keep a curated list of accounts on the other app for a few things, but that’s mainly because NWS, NOAA, and other localized met teams and storm chasers aren’t likely to switch.

@jordicusmaximus @esaeger @voltronic Omg! That is brilliant! 🤣🤣🤣 I’m going to be singing this for days!

@voltronic nobody is owed my time or energy. I don't block people for having differing opinions, but folks who comfortably use slurs are not people I want to give any energy to at all, similarly folks who "disagree" with my existence. I have respectful discussions with friends about things we don't agree on but if it was something that deeply conflicted with my values and was causing me distress, I would drop the friendship. I apply this to social media as well. Be kind, but not a doormat.

@silhouettic
All that makes sense, and clearly not the kind of interaction I'm referring to.

@voltronic understood, it's just something on my mind at the moment 😊

@voltronic yes. All of this.

Some folks are very quick to stomp on that mute or block button.. No benefit of the doubt given.

It serves one well to occasionally review those they've blocked and muted in here, who knows could have been merely a misunderstanding between good people.

@jordicusmaximus @voltronic

Yes, exactly, I think there's way too much made here of the whole mute and block, and what have you. I've only ever muted 2 people here who just were relentlessly talking at people and pushing an agenda as opposed to actually having interactions.
