Just went to try to get a spare key for our car.
TWO HUNDRED QUID!
No thanks. We'll take extra care of the one we've got! 🤣

@stueytheround yeah, the antitheft stuff built into a modern key, or fob, adds to the price. cutting the key, programming the anti-theft chip, etc etc. of course there's the dealer's premium added in.

@nl37tgt This wasn't from the dealer. I dread to think what Honda dealerships would charge!

@stueytheround doesn't hurt to get a price from the dealer. there may be a middleman charge in that 200 quid

@LiberalLibrarian @stueytheround
let me ask here... its just a key fob with anti theft chip, right?

@stueytheround that's literally 4 weeks of groceries for a 3 person household, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels and a hamster

@stueytheround had to ask about a key with chip replacement, depending on the make it may vary between Q550 and Q650 or GBP58 and GBP68 or so

@stueytheround
That's a week worth of groceries plus laundry detergent for four people and two dogs! 😳

@stueytheround How much is it to come out and break into your car, then fix it if you do lose the key?

Just wondering what your risk aversion is :)

@stueytheround WOW!!! It's the transponder that costs so much.

A few decades ago, I was partying in NYC and lost my car key somewhere. My mom who was back home had to go to the dealer to get a replacement key and Fed Ex it to me overnight The fed ex cost more than the key.

@stueytheround
My Nissan key will cost $400US/£322 to replace. Also taking extra care.

@LordyIHopeTheRTapes @stueytheround

Holy crap! Is that more than a car payment? That's ridiculous. Why so expensive?

@stueytheround I miss the time when, if you needed a spare key, you just bought a bag full of keys from a carboot sale for a quid and tried them until you found one that worked. Yeah, I'm old.

@stueytheround I still have a tin of old keys, btw, which I've dutifully kept and added to over the years on the basis that "I might need one". I'm not sure what sort of maladaptive personality trait that exhibits, but here we are...

@stueytheround @InvaderGzim

Is it a transponder?

My Prius transponder broke and I ran into the same obscene price problem.

Turns out, it depends on your definition of "broken."

It didn't work because the case had cracked and the button couldn't function. However, the internal stuff (that would need programming if I ordered a "new" key) was fine.

Ended up finding a new case on Amazon for about $11. And I had a second functional key.

Best. Savings. Ever.

@BlueStateBabe
Oh no. I have a working key but the car only came with one as it was second hand and the previous owner lost one.

I'm looking to buy a new second key, not fix a broken one! @InvaderGzim

@stueytheround @InvaderGzim

Remember how you could buy a new generic remote for your TV and program it FROM the TV?

Wish there was a similar (but safeguarded) method for the car. Especially if you already have one of the keys. Transponder cloning, so to speak.

@BlueStateBabe
I'd still need to get the key part cut, as it has a physical ignition key rather than a start button but yes. It'd be awesome. @InvaderGzim

@stueytheround @InvaderGzim

So Amazon claims to have the programmable keys cheaply, and if it doesn't work, they are returnable. There are several videos on YouTube showing how to program it if you have one already.

Amazon in UK should sell the one for UK specs?

I just watched a UK video on programming a new Prius key...lol! Open and close the door X # of times, etc. etc. Like doing a dance!

@BlueStateBabe
Just had a look.
They're available but I think I'm going to save up and buy an original from a reputable source.

Last thing we need is for it to go wrong half way through a long trip.
@InvaderGzim

@BlueStateBabe
I have no idea.
Unlikely.
Even if were essentially the same model, UK specs have to come up to EU standards so things are built differently.
