Anyone have a good idea of what the reason to deny climate change is? I've noticed most of the climate change deniers I've come across, that will talk about it at least, don't provide a good reason for it, seems deliberate.
@scottyorange when I asked my climate denying parents, they say they don’t believe it because they are conservatives. It has become a tribal issue
@scottyorange I got the "natural cycle" bullshit last time with family. Aging produces a lot of "natural consequences" I noticed we make a drug for every one of them. SO even if you're mule headed enough to think it's "natural" we should still have addressed it years ago. Asteroids are natural too but NASA practiced to divert one didn't they?
@scottyorange The big shots don't want any climate change regulations so their media and political arms throw it into the culture war pile as a liberal plot.
Politicians deny it because their major donors want them to. ($$$)
Some people deny it because their "leaders" tell them it's leftist nonsense.
Some not-very-political people deny it because it would mean expense & inconvenience.
I suspect, tho, that most deniers do so simply because the people around them do.
@scottyorange
It's mostly asking older white people who fear the changes they're seeing in the world and their loss of control and dominance.
Fundamentally, I think they fear that the people they've kept down will treat them as badly as they were treated by them.
@scottyorange: As far as I can tell, it's a reflexive ideological reaction for most. If people in the middle or the left say it's happening, it isn't. It's some kid of trick to make my life harder and to take away what I like and need in life. It's Communist (or whatever)! For others it's just that they're reflexively stupid, and as a matter of personal identity and self-image they can't "just accept what people say". That would make them sheep and Not The One In Charge Of Me.
@scottyorange: (continued) Weak identities, in short.
@scottyorange it's fear of change. They don't want to give up their penis extend...erm, 7 liter diesel 4x4 pickups. Change is very hard for them, and threatens them to the core.
@scottyorange
There are 5 reasons to deny climate change:
1. Money
2. Misinformation
3. Money
4. Misinformation
5. Money
@scottyorange In children, this could be considered oppositional disorder. In adults? Unless it’s an investment portfolio heavily weighted to petroleum interests, there’s NO logical explanation. That sector of our economy has spent BILLIONS on anti-climate-change propaganda. Folks lacking critical thinking skills are the ideal target audience.
