I think I have now resigned to the fact that most people, even infosec professionals, are willing to look the other way on invasive data harvesting so long as they are able to maintain the level of engagement they are accustomed to.

That nice graphic @kel put together should be spread far and wide, but the sad truth is that most people don't seem to care about invasive data policies. They just want to be popular. I don't know how that ever changes.

We've had a few major infosec personalities come our way, but they quickly left. Clearly we aren't what they are looking for, even though they probably know they are safer here than nearly everyone else.

I think most people who come here enjoy their experience, but whatever grassroots marketing we've been doing hasn't really moved the needle much in 6 years. If we were going to have our big moment, it would have happened by now.

I appreciate what J has built and think there is a fantastic community of people here. It disappoints me that 30 million people would rather sign up for something with widely-publicized issues rather than something with a proven track record.

On the other hand, maybe those millions of sheep would ruin this place if they came here. Maybe CoSo is cool because it is small.

Anyway, thank you for listening to my sad and pointless TED talk.

@voltronic If only they knew that "engagement" on social media everywhere but here is poison for the soul.

@voltronic

The take-away: bigger does not always mean better.

@voltronic FWIW, I think Ben Wittes has a decent explanation in his latest substack post here (despite the title):

Having to start over from scratch after overinvesting in twitter is a really bitter pill I think.

@voltronic I love this place. However, it's very left leaning, which is part of what I love. The majority of Americans are moderates. They are looking for a place that's middle of the road. I don't think we want this place pushed to the middle, do we? It's not necessary to insult others who have different views but aren't MAGA style fascists.

@TrueBloodNet
I don't actually think CoSo is left-leaning on the whole; it's that there is a contingent of members who have come here in the past year or so who mostly post left-wing outrage machine material.

My entire block list is made up of those people. Unfortunately, the frequency of those posts caused several OG members who were definitely more center or leaned right to bail out of here. Really good people who left because the political outrage posts created an unpleasant environment.

@voltronic I understand your viewpoint and appreciate the longer view. I talk more as myself here than anywhere else on the net including FB from which I'm on a vaca.

Nevertheless, what I see is left leaning discussions. What I participate in are almost all left leaning or non political here. That's great. It's like having a safe space. But a safe space cannot become our whole world if we want the world to become safer IMO. :)

Thanks so much for sharing your view!

@voltronic @TrueBloodNet

I never thought CoSo leaned left as much as it leans into the truth.

@voltronic
We aren't providing what Twitter provided until recently, a means of low-cost advertising and SEO to boost corporate websites.

If I were an infosec professional promoting myself, I would create an account on all the high traffic websites, but I would keep it all business. Then I would create a pseudonym on Coso and actually enjoy the experience.

The lack of linking to posts on Coso makes it less valuable to those who just want free advertising.

did you happen to see the article about the school technology company that was retaining and selling the children’s data for targeted ads? They were fined $6M but cannot pay out. @voltronic

Ugh, that's awful. My school district used to use Edmodo.
