I made a guide for setting up a Pi-hole with Unbound DNS resolver. I tried to include everything you need to start from scratch.

If you want to go beyond the default blocklists, I recommend starting with the green lists on https://firebog.net/ and adding the appropriate blue lists under Tracking & Telemetry.
If you add these additional lists, be sure to follow the links under Whitelisting Suggestions.
thanks for this...i've been a lil remiss in auditing my list subs...need to refresh
@opie
Same here. I have a few lists that are no longer maintained because they load 0 domains when I update, but it scrolls by too fast to read. I was just going to post in the /pihole subreddit to ask if there is a way to generate a log for this so I can identify and remove them.
yeah, I actually used to pay for a list and they went outta business...and 90% of my blocks come from the steven black list
@opie
If you want a good replacement for that, this is where must of mine come from:
I use oisd as well, it's just checked after sblack...gets very few hits...not zero...but <10%
@opie
A very cool feature was added to the latest Pi-hole update which solves my issue with dead lists. The web interface now has an automatic health check for your lists, and marks the dead ones! Easy peasy.
I now know what’s next on my list!! Thank you!
@voltronic I have no idea what any of that means but if my mind went to a bad place when I read Pi-hole I should probably start drinking 🍷, yes?😂
^ Here is a thread with some great tweaks to add to your pi-hole setup, provided by @john_b :
