I need to get something off my chest.

Would all of these "inspirational" videos of musicians COMING TOGETHER IN HARMONY through the POWER OF MUSIC do it with something besides BEETHOVEN'S ODE TO FUCKING JOY?!?!??!

I have nothing against Beethoven's 9th, but there is SO MUCH amazing music out there. Recycling the same few "hits" reduces "classical" music to predictable memes. It dumbs things down for the audience instead, of expanding their knowledge and experience.

^ This pisses me off to no end, because you are just playing to the lowest common denominator. Do people even know what the rest of that symphony sounds like? Let alone all of the other amazing stuff Beethoven wrote that isn't a ringtone?

I even get sick of Yo-Yo Ma who posting "inspiring" videos because it's always the same damn piece. Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite 1 in G. Because it's the one solo cello piece people recognize. Because it's crammed down their throats.

^ ... And while I'm unloading, I hope no one believes those videos with an entire orchestra or choir performing together are really happening that way. Like that high school choir video from a week or so ago that was supposedly singing "together". Some of us have tried this. Unless you're on a private WAN and / or with a very small group, it's a no go because of network lag. People play to a click track or conductor video, and everything is assembled later. It's smoke and mirrors.

@voltronic Bravo! I have similar views but in reverse, sorta...

[furiously searches for balcony video of harmonized "Nookie" by Limp Bizkit]

@opie
I could show you a video of an operatic soprano performing The Real Slim Shady. It's pretty badass; I saw her do it live.

@voltronic Many Europeans choose it because it‘s the EU anthem.

@lovesdaryl
I'm cool with that if they're doing it for patriotic reasons. Otherwise, it's just being chosen because it's safe and popular.

You want people to appreciate the music you play more? Give them more to appreciate along with the things they love already.

@voltronic there is software that was developed to deal with the network latency and help keep everyone in sync. But I don't believe anyone is using it. It's too easy to do multiple recordings and stitch them together.

@butch
I would be very interested to see that and how it works.

@voltronic
i agree wholeheartedly, however don't sweat it, people come around or not. still. keep sharing more music, there's tons of really good stuff out there

@elmaxx
Oh, I'll keep sharing stuff. I just needed to rant for a while.

I think I'm going to start posting some amazing Beethoven that isn't as popular, but is just as awesome, if not more so.

@voltronic

I happen to love his Fifth. The most famous piece, which symbolized fate (deafness) knocking at the door.

@anatman
Vivaldi is awesome, but it would be nice to hear the Concerto for Two Violins every so often, instead of The Seasons; or Dixit Dominus instead of Gloria.

@Kitty62862
"The" Unfinished Symphony you always hear about is Schubert 8, but there's also a 10th from Mahler, and don't get me started on Mozart's Requiem (nothing at all like the movie).

@anatman
His lieder for solo voice are my favorite. I never liked his solo piano music though.

@Kitty62862

@voltronic

You’re going to laugh, but, for me, Ode to Joy is synonymous with the Raising of the Stanley Cup Banner 1/20/1995 at Madison Square Garden (delayed by lockout)

@Kitty62862 @voltronic

It always makes me think of Friedrich Schiller's "An die Freude"

...which is staggeringly uncreative & obvious, as that's what Beethoven (mostly) used for the final movement of the 9th.

IIRC, it's not exactly the same as the poem, though near enough.
