Before you ask why victims didn’t evacuate despite warnings of an approaching storm, please consider that many folks don’t have cars, have no family or friends to stay with, can’t afford gasoline or hotels, don’t dare risk losing their jobs if they can’t return in time, can’t safely evacuate their elderly loved ones, won’t leave without their pets, or have legitimate health concerns about staying in shelters. Poor shaming them during and after a catastrophe is not a good look.

Liberal Redneck - How Many Different Lies Can MAGA Tell About These Hurricanes, Y'all?

This building is so uber brutal, I had to check to see if it's real. The last picture shows it from a different angle, with more context.

Chuvash State Opera and Ballet Theater

I decided to read House of Leaves this month.

It's going to be challenging. I don't just mean the nontraditional elements of the book. I mean it's a big book and difficult to hold. It need to be the print book, because elements of it just don't work as an eBook. (I don't think there even is one.)

I'm wishing I'd gotten the hardback rather than the paperback, which is floppy. Usually I love a floppy paperback, but this is too big to be manageable.

Oh well. Likely to be worth it.

So, Musk and his "free" Starlink offer for Hurricane hit parts in the US 🤔

Catch is it ain't free at all, Upon inspection, the offer of a free month of Starlink service seems to be the type of deal you might give a new customer, for anyone interested in taking up the offer they still have to pay $400 for the dish, including tax & shipping, and they're automatically rolled into a $120 a month contract when the "free" month ends

I'm somewhat caffeine sensitive and can't drink much coffee without feeling on edge. Tea doesn't affect me the same way. The theobromine seems to counteract the caffeine (and there's less of it).

But man, neither tea nor coffee have this overall effect.

It's interesting: if you taste the water right after pouring it over the beans, it's bitter. But as it brews, the natural sweetness of the cacao comes out.

I like it hot with a very small amount of sugar, or cold with some soy milk. I was disappointed by the one which has artificial flavors added, but enjoyed the Ultimate Dark and *loved* the Ghana light roast.

Almost no caffeine, but the theobromine has a definite relaxing/anti-anxiety effect and (I think) improves my focus.

I recently got a sampler of Crio Bru--which is cacao beans ground for brewing like coffee.

I'm *so* happy with it and it'll be a regular beverage for me. Probably not every day, but a couple of times a week.

It's interesting. They say you can brew it in a drip coffee maker, but I wouldn't. I'd stick with the recommended approach of a french press. It needs to brew longer (10 minutes) and the cocoa butter leaves a significant residue.

I've tried three flavors so far and have two more. 1/

It Would Be Night in Caracas
Karina Sainz Borgo with Elizabeth Bryer (Translator)

This is a beautifully written and excruciating book about a woman trying to navigate the chaos and violence in Venezuela as the country falls apart. The strength and weakness of this book is the very tight personal perspective. The protagonist is grieving for her mother, and in survival mode, reacting to immediate threats and not reflecting on the bigger picture.
