the Glastonbury thorn's Celtic connection, for whom trees had deeply sacred significance:

bards used a hawthorn when chanting the glam dicin, as a kingly sceptre, drastic punishment for damaging one, possibly a source for some miracles.

glam dicin: a bard + 6 companions go to a hawthorn bush, stand with backs to it. with a slingshot in one hand and a branch in the other, sang the glam, finally leaving their branches by the the hawthorn's roots.
