September 27, 1950 ~Gwendolyn Brooks is awarded Pulitzer Prize for her book of poetry β€”β€œAnnie Allen.” She was the first Black so honored. Brooks published her first poem in a children’s magazine, β€œAmerican Childhood,” when she was 13 years old. By the time she was 16, she had compiled a portfolio of around 75 published poems and had her work critiqued by poet and novelist James Weldon Johnson.

the Second Circuit, a position he held until 1965, when Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, named him solicitor general. Following the retirement of Justice Tom Clark in 1967, President Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court, a decision confirmed by the Senate with a 69-11 vote.
