Today I roasted 2 whole chickens, and deboned for use later. Chicken was rubbed with mustard and chili paste.

Saved bones for stock, now in freezer.

Smells damn good in here.

@corlin So Kiddo has become not obsessed, but quasi obsessed with making broth out of chicken feet. He gets chicken feet from the farmers market and uses the Fake instapot to cook for a long time, making a broth with lots of gelatin from the feet. Drinks the broth for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with other food.

On the other hand, these have another use if you are looking for Halloween decorations. 🤣😱🐓

@ACG2

Good to know/
I put the feet in with the bones to freeze.

btw these were "local free range" chickens from the farm stand.

@corlin

raccoons and possums would welcome those on halloween 😋😋😋

calcium supplements.

@holon42 @corlin

do you boil the chicken carcasses before giving them to the raccoons and possums? i've put some chicken leg bones out late at night when only the possums & raccoons come- not the feral cats. they really seem to enjoy the bones.

@QueenOfEverything @corlin

i don't do this, but my friend in LA gives them raw chicken feet. opossums and raccoons appreciate those.

@holon42 @corlin

Tacoma allows 4 chickens or ducks for the standard yard in the city, but no roosters. I haven't seen any chickens so far. I haven't put eggs or raw chicken out ... didn't want to "trigger" a more primitive taste for the raccoons & possums.

They're not even really interested in the wet cat food... love to chow down on Cheerios and cat & dog kibble.

The possums are more into bones and crunchy things.

Reach out to your state Department of Wildlife and ask about the ORV (oral rabies vaccine) pellet program. Raccoons are fairly susceptible, this makes sure you, the raccoon, and the other critters stay safe.

Possums do not get rabies and are entirely beneficial, BTW. Big possum fan here.

@Cosmichomicide @holon42 @corlin

Great idea... unfortunately, like in most states, raccoons fall in between the cracks. Local animal control just refer people to commercial contractors who are charging up to $500 to remove 1 raccoon (healthy). Dept of Wildlife doesn't deal with raccoon problems- refer to local.

I will try and track down ORV- this is an extended family of raccoons that have been here since I moved in almost 2 years ago... but rabies is critical. Thanks for the tip!

@QueenOfEverything @holon42 @corlin

Oh, not to remove! You can get some pellets to toss out. It's a wildlife health program, not critter removal.

@Cosmichomicide @holon42 @corlin

Ha! no I got that... or you would have gotten a very terse reply! Just was checking. WA state doesn't have the program... last cat with rabies was in 1976 and last dog was 1987. They have no reports at all of raccoons (but then they don't pay any attention to them) do acknowledge that WA has bats with rabies that could be passed to raccoons.

I've got this at the top of my list to keep researching. Definitly want the pellets because there are probably 6-8

@Cosmichomicide @holon42 @corlin

Rabies is always possible. I've got two old raccoons. This one in Neil Young (old man!) who is a sweetheart and shares with possums & feral cats. But he's shaky & slow... and I've got one other one I keep watch on. Neither one is showing any disease or sickness... just old age. It's upsetting to know that there's no one to call to humanely help. I'm still thinking on this- merciful herbs or such if the worst happens (not rabies, just old age)

@QueenOfEverything

i see the opossum is keeping an eye on Neil, although he's not being aggressive at all.

it's wonderful to have these wild companions ♥️

Bold was here again this morning. this year's kit, Molly's, whom i haven't seen in a long while now.

she was looking shaky a couple times when i saw her, she's getting on too.

i miss seeing her.
