They added an area code in 1947, one of the first in the nation but nobody needed to use it when we were kids. They split 914 up into many different areas codes around the year 2000. My dad, who moved from NY to FL in 2014 still keeps a MagicJack "landline" with an 845 area code.

@CinnamonGirlE in July I'm moving with my family to Spain for a year. Maintaining our current US mobile numbers is going to be a challenge.

@hallmarc @CinnamonGirlE

Why must you? Can’t you forward the old # into new phone?

@LnzyHou @CinnamonGirlE yes but I need to pay to maintain my original number or port it. I can't port it to a Spanish carrier. I'm looking into Google Voice.

@hallmarc
I just changed carriers. A little of a bumpy process,
But entirely different from what you are talking about. I wish you the best of luck. And I look forward to hearing about and seeing Spain.

@hallmarc @CinnamonGirlE Look into WhatsApp. Lots of the rest of the world runs on it. Use your current phone anywhere there is internet, so long as your recipient also has WhatsApp.
I might also suggest getting an e-SIM card. As long as your phone isn't too old, you can download a second e-SIM card local to Spain to your phone, and switch between the two SIM cards as needed.
Best wishes! Moving to Spain for a year sounds fantastic!!

@Superstitionsee @CinnamonGirlE thanks! Yes, I currently have a Pixel 8 and I used esims the past two summers in Spain. The trick is that I have to either pay to maintain the number or port it and park it. But I also need to be able to receive SMS at that number sometimes for MFA or phone verification. If I use both a US and Spanish ESIM, I'll have to pay some US carrier for service whenever I'm away from WiFi. I might port it to Google Voice... we'll see.

@hallmarc @CinnamonGirlE Please post when you figure it out. 😃
We'll soon be living half the year out of the country, and I'm open to any technology that works, or idea that will save us some cash.
