Alright, just content-wiped my Reddit account then deleted it.

As I did with Twitter last year.

And Facebook (99%) in 2019. (My FB account is technically still active with a message saying so so no family members can have someone impersonate me.)

Ok, so..

Worldwide deadly pandemic.
Titanic disaster
Russian revolution.

History doesn't always repeat, but it always rhymes...

So…. Anyone have any good Lemmy instances for retrocomputing, Pacific-Northwest-US/Canada, InfoSec, role-playing-games (D&D/Pathfinder) or electric vehicles?

I know there's infosec.pub but it doesn't seem to be working accepting new users at the moment.

@evistre I wouldn't mind a "federated forums" thing, though. One interface to see feeds from multiple forums at once. I know some special-interest forums have links to related forums. (Log in to a Camaro forum, and at the bottom you'll see links that actually go to related Corvette forums, Mustang forums, etc.) But they tend to be VERY-related, and solely because one person runs them all; not in any mass-federation thing, and you can't add arbitrary extras.

@evistre (Which is the case for a few. There is a forum for one thing I care about. But it's lucky if it gets half a dozen posts/comments a month. The subreddit may be only slightly busier - but I *NOTICE* when people post there as it's in my feed with all my completely-unreleated subreddits.)

And yes, I view Reddit solely via old.reddit.com/new - No wonky new UI, no algorithm deciding what I see. All my subreddits, purely chronological.

@evistre The biggest problem is the simple fact that Reddit has largely replaced single-purpose web forums for many things. And sort of the whole point is that it has a huge user base, so the subreddits with 100,000 people are popular, but some of those people also are in the 100-ish that wouldn't really have the userbase to maintain a separate web forum.

I visit Reddit daily, and not miss the occasional post in a small subreddit. A forum? I might forget for months to check.

@th3j35t3r Yep. My state's DMV is among them. And I have an appointment tomorrow to renew (and get RealID compliant) license! I bet it's going to be busy...

Oddest Linux oddity of the day: customer apparently has a /tmp that you can't execute from.

Dang, my pressure washer has died.

Plugged it in, turned it on, heard "motor whine" without any pressure, then the internal circuit breaker tripped.

Tried to reset, wouldn't. Looks like the motor burned itself out.

Not bad for a low-end unit I've had for 10 years that was already at least 10 years old when I got it free from a roadside "free" pile.

@voltronic @th3j35t3r While I CAN physically type on a regular keyboard (I've done "piano style" for decades) for short periods, even that tires out my wrists quickly. It truly is the wrist side-to-side angle that exacerbates my carpal-tunnel.

My carpal isn't terrible yet, this has been a preemptive "keep from getting terrible" measure so far. The big difference between typing and piano playing is that on the piano, your arms move around, even with the best typing technique, it's mostly hands.

Yeah, because you are still technically employed at one WFH $100k+ job for a couple more days of paid PTO while you start your new WFH $100k+ job *REALLY* is what International Workers Day was rallying against…..

And not the single moms who have to work 2, 3, or even 4 part-time jobs *AND* hold "gig economy" "side hustles" to still live paycheck-to-paycheck because our crappy capitalist society that devalues blue-collar work and encourages companies to only hire part time without benefits...

*SIGH* Discussion on elephant-site about May Day and having to work on it. All the people involved are definitely "privileged" in high-paying IT roles. (Disclaimer: that includes me.)

One tooted "I'm not only starting my new job today, I'm still technically employed at my previous job, so I probably win some award for Most Employed Person on May Day"

(1/2)

@voltronic @th3j35t3r If I didn’t really need an ergonomic, I’d absolutely be using one still. Likely the one I first got with an actual PS/2 in 1990.

FBI: Rent-a-Hitman site nabbed Air National Guardsman who was β€œexcited” to kill - from Ars Technica:

"US authorities say a 21-year-old Air National Guardsman applied for hitman work on the satirical RentAHitman.com website and later agreed to kill a fictional person in exchange for $5,000"

@Vikky Nah, it just meant I needed to get in my hourly "stand up at least once this hour" to go refill. :-D

Imagine the outrage if the GOP discovered Justice Jackson Brown had taken a single dime from their favorite bogeyman, George Soros.
