The first messenger
without user IDs
Other apps have user IDs: Signal, Matrix, Session, Briar, Jami, Cwtch, etc.
SimpleX does not, not even random numbers.
This radically improves your privacy.
Welcome, CoSo People! If you would like to route your incoming messages through John's servers instead of the official ones:
why you should SimpleX chat

Signal's security is it requires you to register with a mobile number. This may reveal your identity, but the requirement may change soon - also msgs aren't 100% deleted
Leak from XMPP IM server can lead to privacy issue for the targeted user when con- sidering complex aggregation of metadata types -

A vulnerability in the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) feature of Cisco Meeting Server software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition for users of XMPP conferencing applications
P2P networks also present privacy and identity issues. In respect to privacy, a peer's data stream may be compromised by fellow peers who assist in transmitting the data.
p2
A direct example is that of VoIP applications, such as Skype, which route traffic in a P2P fashion
A large portion of the heavy P2P traffic is caused by inefficient overlay topology and the blind flooding. Security and anonymity are other concerns in P2P systems
As a result, multiple concerning security risks are identified, i.e., service free riding, video segment pollution, peer IP leak and resource squatting. ...

The macOS client for the Signal fails to properly delete disappearing messages from the recipient’s system, potentially exposing sensitive messages.

alll above apps/services rely on you giving info before you can use them like:
Usually based on a phone number, in some cases on usernames
DNS-based addresses
Public key or some other globally unique ID
If operator’s servers are compromised
Does not protect users' metadata
While P2P are distributed, they are not federated - they operate as a single network
P2P networks either have a central authority or the whole network can be compromised -

simple X just asks for a username
that's it
you can create as many usernames as you want
you can have one for chating with certain people and others for chatting with other people it's simple
i have a few myself and find it very handy to have multiple usernames that way some people don't actually know my real online username ecksmc they see another name
i'd recommend it and yes it can be hard to get others in your own circle to switch but even having a few switch it will catch on 👍
also no other user can see your alt-usernames only folk you interact with using the alt-name can see
not one user can see how many alt-names you have on the go
it's a great app and toll for talking to folk
not often i give a service/app a 10 rating but SimpleX gets a 10/10 for all
not a fully featured app but that's kinda a bonus these days and you can pick servers to connect to and use
@john_b servers if you want
https://www.virtuallypotato.com/simplex/#servers
easy to set-up 👍 and John ty for this option
oh and we SimpleX users have a CoSo group on the go
just ask for an invite
@voltronic - owner
@john_b - server man
or any other SimpleX user will be happy to send a invite URL/QR code your way
as owner Voltronic will have to approve - i think - it might approve automatically cause of the link/QR code << not 100% on that
become a SimpleX user - get your friends using it - IRW it's a must is security/privacy is your thing

The app is also packed with other features like disappearing messages, encrypted file transfers, encrypted voice messages, encrypted audio and video calls, decentralized private groups, and a cool incognito mode which connects new conversations to a randomly-generated profile instead of your primary one. There's even a CLI client"
it's just my opinion after using the app for around several months - try it be surprised or not BUT it is very privacy concision
