DNS-based addresses
Public key or some other globally unique ID
If operator’s servers are compromised
Does not protect users' metadata
While P2P are distributed, they are not federated - they operate as a single network
P2P networks either have a central authority or the whole network can be compromised -

simple X just asks for a username
that's it
you can create as many usernames as you want
you can have one for chating with certain people and others for chatting with other people it's simple
i have a few myself and find it very handy to have multiple usernames that way some people don't actually know my real online username ecksmc they see another name
i'd recommend it and yes it can be hard to get others in your own circle to switch but even having a few switch it will catch on 👍
also no other user can see your alt-usernames only folk you interact with using the alt-name can see
not one user can see how many alt-names you have on the go
it's a great app and toll for talking to folk
not often i give a service/app a 10 rating but SimpleX gets a 10/10 for all
not a fully featured app but that's kinda a bonus these days and you can pick servers to connect to and use

it's just my opinion after using the app for around several months - try it be surprised or not BUT it is very privacy concision

using simpleX is the best way to stay anonymous since it asks for no details other than a username to sign up
other msg apps track you and ask for phone number, email, location etc......
SimpleX asks for nothing personal you don't even need a email to get started just a username and you are good to go - there are groups but not publicly searchable they are invite only by URL's/QR codes which cuts down on trolls/fake actors/ impersonators etc..
@ecksmc I thought that it was a filter thing where other apps you may use get filtered through it so it doesn't collect your information. That's what I was trying to work out.
