The song that made my day 2023.01.24:

Death Valley Girls - "Wear Black"

Because I'm an absolute sucker for fuzzed-out garage punk, especially if it also features wild flourishes of Farfisa organ, which this does. From the LA group's 2018 LP "Darkness Rains", brought to my attention on DJ Zelda's Humboldt Hot Air show The Cleaving Hours.

Sports Team - "The Drop"

London's Sports Team marry a hook that could've come from the Dandy Warhols to a vocal melody that gives me a strong Franz Ferdinand vibe--as do the lyrics (starting with "Oh, Katie died, just waiting for the right time to retire"). A gleeful tweak to the nose of work culture.

we're disparate
get shoes to eat
it's just mop hill

Envisioning a protest in which Tucker Carlson is pelted with green M&Ms by a crowd chanting "Fuck this! Fuck this! Fuck this!"

The song that made my day 2023.01.22:

Screaming Females - "Brass Bell"

This is a prog-punk tour de force, from the loopy synth that blurs, decays and is replaced by the full band playing it in stop/start time, through the multiple distinct interlocking sections (including not one but two metal-inspired guitar solos). The singer keeps saying it's too loud but trust me, you're going to want it loud.

The song that made my day 2023.01.18:

John Handy - "Hard Work"

With its casually swinging saxophone and funky bass gelling into such a sweet groove my first guess would have been late '60s, Blue Note. But surprise! This was released on the Impulse! label and recorded in 1976 by a group led by John Handy on the sax.

Margo Price - "Time Machine"

Alt-country rising star Price with a slice of psilocybin-and-'70s-pop Americana about regret. Someone get this woman a TARDIS, stat!

I believe if Biden broke the law, there should be consequences.
I know T***pers believe the same thing--about Biden, who immediately, voluntarily cooperated with the investigation into the documents. But do they believe the same thing about T***p, who threw every excuse, deflection and outright lie he could think of against the wall to see which ones had the best chance of helping him escape accountability for his crimes (which he's confessed to multiple times in the process)? Spoiler: nope.

The song that made my day 2023.01.15:

Billy Nomates - "Balance Is Gone"

An upbeat little tune that hurtles along on a growling bassline, decorated by a rotating cast of pleasantly surprising synthpop flourishes that drop in for a bit, disappear, and sometimes return. Especially tasty are the synth/guitar solo and the spot when the drummer goes from hitting every beat equally to emphasizing the 2 and the 4.

The song that made my day 2023.01.14:

Belle and Sebastian - "A Bit of Previous"

I played their album "If You're Feeling Sinister" so many times that my partner, who initially liked it, soured on the band. But I still listen, and this one gave me a proper rush. It's got everything I love about them: jangly indie pop sound, literate, vulnerable lyrics, slightly twee but with a touch of darkness to balance it.

The song that made my day 2023.01.12:
Herbie Hancock - "Hardrock"
I picture Herbie in the recording studio immediately after nailing the master take of "Rockit" looking up and saying, "That was great, everyone. Now let's try it again, but this time, make it more METAL!"

Jeff Beck's tenure with The Yardbirds lasted barely 20 months but it produced an astonishing string of singles that rapidly upped the ante for psychedelic rock, largely due to the explosive sounds Beck blasted out of his guitar:
"Heart Full of Soul"
"Evil Hearted You"/"Still I'm Sad"
"Shapes of Things"/"You're A Better Man Than I"
"Over Under Sideways Down"
"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"/"Psycho Daisies"
His legacy was massive even before he began his long and amazing solo career. RIP.

The New Pornographers - "Really Really Light"
Vancouver indie power pop group The New Pornographers had me at "Mass Romantic" in 2000. 23 years later they've still got me with this new track, a quieter, more nuanced pop snack wrapped around the rapture-inducing vocal harmonies of A.C. Newman, Kathryn Calder and Neko Case. What song(s) made your day today?

The Song That Made My Day 2023.01.09
Stepz feat Fizzler - "Pacman"
Welds samples from the classic video game to a drill 'n' bass-heavy backing track that calls back to grime, a subgenre of U.K. rap from early in the millennium. I'll admit to not understanding much of the slang, but I think it's making a serious statement on racism in a humorous way. What song made your day today?
