The Song That Made My Day 2023.01.08
Iggy Pop - "Strung Out Johnny"
Iggy sings a poignant junkie's tale (is this about Johnny Thunders?) in his low voice, with a menacing bass riff to boost the drama. Another late-career winner for the Popper.
What song(s) made your day today?

Liberals and progressives value democracy even though we don't win every election and don't always get our way. Fascism is for supporters of sore losers like Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, both coincidentally(?) currently taking refuge in Ron DeSantis's Florida.

The song that made my day 2023.01.06:
Sessa - "Ponta de Faca"
Builds hypnotically using a simple repeating guitar figure and deadened bass strings, with gentle touches of flute that make the track somehow simultaneously lush and spare and lyrics practically whispered in Portuguese.

The Song That Made My Day 2023.01.04
The Casual Dots - "The Frequency of Fear"
Washington D.C. indie rock supergroup who made their debut album in 2004, then waited 18 years to release a follow-up. This gem leads it off, sounding less like American indie than something you'd hear on a Kiwipop classic from The Clean or The Bats.

Lead Stance

if fuchsia'd fall
into maya harms
and tram bull
like gov. flower

A slinky, trip-hopped-up retro-soul beat underpins Ponder's powerful, uplifting vocal.

Kalele shows off her new sweater (and the recent haircut that made it necessary). OK, really she's wondering why I'm holding up some rectangular thing and trying to get her to look at me.

2023 off to a shaky start--literally. Just felt another strong jolt here: 5.4 centered near Rio Dell (those poor people have already suffered enough.) Not as heavy as the quake before Christmas but stronger than any of the aftershocks. Nothing fell off the shelves this time, though, and we still have power, so that's a positive!

Also, if anyone spots a good song I missed, please let me know so I can add it. Thanks!

Here's my New Year's playlist, featuring X, Ella Fitzgerald, ABBA, Taylor Swift, Tom Waits, The Zombies, The Eagles and more in addition to the expected U2 track in case you find yourself without a soundtrack to the rolling over of the calendar.
May 2023 bring peace, contentment and joy to you, everyone you love, and everyone who loves you.

Yeah, I mean, poetry dies all the time, but what's the point of focusing on that when it comes back to life as soon as you open the other eye?

I gathered up all the 2022 releases I liked into a playlist, and this month I listened to all 500(!!) of them, chose around 50 that stood out, and ranked them. Here's the playlist, with the top 50 front-loaded in order. I don't expect anybody to listen to all 500, but they're all there in case any of you are just. that. crazy. 🙂 If you find yourself liking more of the first few songs than not, I do recommend all 500 as worthy of a listen. youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDJ

Here's my winter holiday playlist, featuring my favorite yuletide songs from The Green Pajamas, The Pretenders, Roland Kirk, Big Star, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Aimee Mann, and more. I'm kind of picky about my Christmas music so it's a labor of love and necessity putting together a set I can stand to listen to on repeat year after year, and I hope it enhances your holiday environment whatever you celebrate. 🙂

Seems like a good time to remember that Salvador Dali created Christmas cards for many years.

It's not just Donald Trump or Kari Lake. If you elect a Republican dogcatcher don't be surprised if they claim they have evidence (which they never produce) that the Deep State has trained packs of dogs to eat the ballots of GOP voters and fetch stacks of Democratic votes, as detailed in Dinesh D'Souza's next film "2000 Chihuahuas"

Note to Republicans: please keep owning us libs by letting Donald Trump pick your Senate candidates. We get so triggered by that. Also, please keep telling Republicans not to vote early or by mail. Those are ways that Democrats vote and thus inherently evil.

I livestreamed a reading from my living room last year of "Pandemic Summer", the first volume of my Hypnopompic Diaries series.
