hellloooooo #cosogaming folks. I remember someone saying "<insert name here> is the greatest game ever and I can't be convinced otherwise" or something akin to that and I am unable to find it. So if you said it, please say it again or how about everyone tell me the best game you like that IS NOT HORROR (because I'm a big scaredy pants). I have all platforms, but lean toward Playstation and NIntendo of all generations #cosogamers help a sister out!
@willsecurity oh, jump scares are the worst for me. I am so embarrassed by how bad it is...the dog barks or a door opens unexptectedly IRL and I jump. darn :( I started to try that game and got that feeling and 'noped' out :( it looks cool.
@Stace Greedfall was fun I finished that one .. enjoying Bleeding Edge as well
As always there is the Witcher 3 considered to be the greatest video game ever created
#Control wasn't big on jump scares, IMO; more about creepy ambience and floating people in a government office building all chanting the Hiss Incantation. So...kinda horror?
If horror isn't your thing, I can't recommend #TheOuterWorlds enough. Soooo great. So much fun. Imagine playing Firefly/Serenity, only better.
Not that I haven't posted this before (but can't find the previous toot w/it, so...):
@Stace depends on how long of a game you want but I’d highly recommend: dragons quest 11 for switch, or basically any of the yakuza games. But if you want something shorter shovel knight is good, Tetris 99 or Tetris effect.
@Stace
The Talos Principle is a very engrossing puzzler, if you like puzzles. Unravel is fun too.
Fable TLC is like... a classic salt and pepper steak, as far as stories go. Basic fantasy, good monsters, compelling and emotional story but it’s nothing particularly new.
I like the combat but it’s really easy to get OP, especially with the resurrection phials, and especially if you know what spells are worth it (slow time, berserk, enflame, and physical shield ftw). The morality scale is an interesting twist but it’s honestly verging on gimmicky... ->
@Stace Because the story isn’t really dramatically altered by your choices - there’s some, but it’s not like there’s a butterfly effect or anything. Mass Effect does a bit better but let’s be honest, it would take a quantum crystal to store enough data to really pull that off well, I think.
@GlytchMeister I was actually going to say Mass Effect lol @Stace
Srs tho Mass Effect 1-3 is a masterpiece the likes of which we might never see again. I particularly like the first game, but I recommend playing through all of them with a single character starting with 1. Tons of player agency, an intricate story, quality voice acting, etc.
^^^ Mass Effect is an excellent game. The ending is bothersome, and the infamous face reveal stung, but yeah. Probably the closest to a honest to goodness butterfly effect in regards to player choices/morality we’ve ever had, and in light of what the industry is up to lately, probably the best we are likely to see in our lifetimes.
Excellent sci-fi story, too - especially in regards to tackling philosophical and moral conundrums of A.I. and war waging.
@Stace If you want an interesting and, imo very unique story, I personally recommend Assassin’s Creed, AC2, AC Brotherhood, and AC Revelations.
And I /guess/ AC3 just to complete Desmond’s story.
AC1 is a bit slow but it lays the foundation and gets the ball rolling. It really takes off with AC2, which is probably the best of them all. The story is complex and very intriguing and, while it has ups and downs in quality, I think it’s one of the best stories in videogaming.
@Stace If it’s replayability you’re after, nothing can beat Bethesda and the mod-friendly games like Fallout and Skyrim.
The original release of Skyrim (“Oldrim”) still has a thriving community of active modders, damn near a decade after it was released. That is UNHEARD of, especially in the age of new sequels in a franchise every year or two.
It’s buggy and the voice acting cast is small as fuck and could definitely be better and the graphics didn’t age well...
But that doesn’t matter... ->
@Stace ... because there are literally at least three mods for every issue you might have with the game, lol.
And there’s resources available to help you make your own mods, too.
I don’t think there’s another game like that on the market anywhere (at least from a different company).
It can literally be turned into another game - u want sum Darksouls in ur Skyrim? There’s mods for that. U want sum Macho Man Randy Savage? Thomas the Tank Engine? Hell yeah, they got you. ... ->
@Stace ... There’s mods that update the graphics like you wouldn’t believe, mods that overhaul the combat and magic systems, mods that add whole new storylines and playable areas and monsters and everything...
Skyrim with mods is second only to fuckin MINECRAFT in terms of sheer infinite possibility.
Oh, yeah, and Minecraft is bonkers, too.
Skyrim + mods and Minecraft are both excellent games to lose vast swaths of time to. Approach with caution, lol.
@GlytchMeister I haven't tried Skyrim because I hear it's addictive...but I've been all in Fallout 4 with mods so figure I've probably been already been playing similar games (I get 'caught' in RPGs and can't stop). I do like the flexibility of mods a lot! Fallout is fantastic but I've played a few variations and am not feeling post-apocalyptic at the moment ;) I hadn't considered Mass Effect...will look at them now that I've gotten some new perspective. Thanks :)!
So, what Glytch said is all true. I've talked with @amarand about how I play Fallout4 like it's Minecraft. I can LITERALLY make the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the image I desire. There are mods in Skyrim that turn the dragons into My Little Pony characters. Even mods made just because somebody's wife has a phobia, so they replaced Ghouls/radroaches/whatever in Fallout with Bandit models. Thanos ain't got nothing on me. Reality can be whatever I make it.
@Heucuva8 the phobia mod for ghouls is the one Ithat made me able to play again. honestly there are places I d9n't want to go because I freak out with ghouls.....usually I can just wear good armor and take companions and close my eyes but that is not really playing ;) I like settlement building too :D @amarand @GlytchMeister
I built a settlement at Big John's Salvage yard.
😆
@Stace @amarand @GlytchMeister
@Heucuva8 how'd you do that? I didn't know there was a workshop there! @amarand @GlytchMeister
There's not. But the Build Anywhere Workshop mod allows you to craft an item called "~Fetch Workshop" under Utility in the Chemistry table.
And that item, when made is in your inventory and summons a workshop bench to your location. Wherever you are. Even outside of Settlements. And you can use it to enter Settlement Mode anywhere.
@Heucuva8 oooh! I remember seeing that one. <making notes for later> @amarand @GlytchMeister
Bethesda makes the buggiest piles of dragon dung, but they are simultaneously a masterclass on how to craft an amazing, well-built game story. All of this is true, despite it seeming to be a paradox.
There’s a mod for that, too. Unofficial Skyrim Patch does a damned good job at fixing shit, and if you happen to find a bug seemingly unique to your game that isn’t addressed by the Unofficial Patch mod, you can probably find a dedicated patch with some careful searching.
I had an issue where Esbern wouldn’t talk. Completely broke the quest. Fixed that shit with one mod, and the quest played like a dream forever after.
@Heucuva8 Bethesda f***ed up so bad with Fallout 76 that I won't buy their products anymore.
An entirely valid response. Buying used copies gives no money to the developer, and is legal. But I’m not about to judge you if you hoist the black flag.
@GlytchMeister @Expecting_Words @Heucuva8 @amarand @Stace my favorite Bethesda games tend to be made by obsidian
@GlytchMeister @Expecting_Words @Heucuva8 @amarand @Stace my favorite BioWare games too for that matter
Personally, I tend to boycott social practices and moral issues rather than defects in the product but everyone's free to spend money how they want.
ex: I refuse to buy from Hobby Lobby or Chick-fil-A, for their anti-LGBTQ policies and Hobby Lobby's association with known antiquities smugglers in the Middle East. Black Market selling historical artifacts that belong in a museum. (At least, the ones that aren't fakes.)
Their products are fine.
@Heucuva8 Howard is an inveterate liar and Bethesda doesn't respect it's audience enough even to deliver products people paid for. It's a black mark against any affiliated games. Sure, if Arkane studios puts out a sequel to Prey - they won't, because corporate killed that project, but if they did - I'd give it a look.
@Heucuva8 It's not a boycott, it's a recognition of poor work product that in turn reflects Bethesda's warped priorities. At this point they make bad, unfinished games with good writers.
You have said nothing incorrect.
Original Assassin's Creed is useful for story, but little else. I love Altaïr, but the game leaves a lot to be desired.
AC2 however, and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.. there is a game to fall in love with. Brotherhood (Rome) and Revelations (Istanbul) are completely awesome.
Those are games worth getting a console for.
Absolutely. AC1 is really only recommended to understand the story, as I am not sure it would make much sense without it. I suppose you could just read the wiki summary or something, but... eh. I feel like the game does a good job of helping the player really /get/ the Assassin “culture”l which I think is important for tone, and helps deepen some of the gravitas of AC2 as Ezio learns the same lessons in his own way.
... ->
It’s useful for the story, and little else. Absolutely correct. But I think it’s worth mentioningd that just the story is a BIG part of the enjoyability of the games, so AC1 should, imo, be considered fairly integral.
It /could/ do with a remake, tho. Ngl, it was slow and mechanics were irritating at times.
I fuckin hated the assassination of that Teutonic Knight in Acre on the ship. Master assassin that can’t swim, has to hop across poles sticking out of water to a ship.
That one was a pain in the backside.. there was something else in Acre about avoiding detection, that was .. frustrating.
AC2, just spending time exploring was part of the fun. Then AC2B which had a huuuge map to explore. (That's my favourite in the series.)
I'm with you all the way though. Original AC for the story.
@Stace the original god of war was and remains one of my favorite games. The story was compelling, and the moral choices were disturbing but fit the arc.
The franchise kinda went wonky after the original game.
Extra Credits talks about this and I for one, agree with them.
True. The first game was amazing. I'd love to see a remaster with cleaned up graphics and maybe some minor extra content and polishing to bring it up to date. But after 1, it just kinda becomes Grand Theft Auto: Athens.
They're not broken, like most of Bethesda's games... Just don't live up to what the story could've been.
@Stace I think it was Control ... which is ... not horror but suspense and horroresque?
Like no blood and not a lot of jump scares but sort of x-files level
