I brought the Sony SSC5’s in from the garage and am A/B testing them against some JBL Monitor 530’s and GR-Research low-end DIY kit speakers. The Sony are winning. How are speakers this cheap THIS good? I mean really?!?

Well, I’m not sure that my expectations were all that fair. They sound *okay*. I suspect it’s down to the drivers I chose (a.co/d/bqypawG). They fit (mostly),are 8 Ohm, and were cheap.

I’m listening to Leon Redbone, and he doesn’t push the highs or lows especially, and they’re agreeable.

No real high end or low end (go figure). I might’ve been wise to whip up a low pass filter, at maybe 80Hz. Hmm. The enclosures seem decent- I might want to scale up and try a bigger driver.

My latest experiment in 3D printing speaker enclosures…. Just about ready for listening tests.

Nope. I’ve now tried “full range” drivers in these 3D printed spherical speaker enclosures, and no bueno. Round isn’t the shape, apparently.

A while ago I had upgraded from factory speakers in my ride to Polk speakers, then subsequently upgraded two of the Polks to a larger diameter, leaving me with two unneeded coaxial drivers. As they are coaxial (meaning there is a tweeter in the middle of a midrange) and have a capacitor to cancel sounds below 80Hz, I shouldn’t need any crossover network. I found some 3D printable files for 3” speakers and scaled them up to 4” size.

peeps- I know that in a crossover network, capacitors block signals below a given frequency, and inductors block signals above a given frequency, but in the case of a “full range” driver, why would you need multiples of each? One cap and one inductor really ought to do the job, no? Can you notch filter somehow this way? Not sure why you’d need to with a “full range” driver, but I’m scratching my head on this one.

Hahahah. The Bose Accoustimass, best-selling speaker system beloved by department store shoppers, and unable to play sounds between 200Hz to 280Hz has now been recalled for the bass module maybe causing fires.

Bose recalls over 1 million ancient subwoofers due to potential fire hazard

When I’m trying to scrutinize gear, I usually listen to Pink Floyd and Steely Dan- both those acts were obsessive about recording quality. You know who else was, and doesn’t seem to get recognized for it (in addition to being a galactically underrated guitar player)?

Prince. The sound quality is consistently exceptional.

I’ve learned that proper gear you can just leave on or in standby, but these goofy named Chinese brands won’t live long that way. Get any extended warranty you can, and don’t buy Topping. Their warranty is a complete lie.

I’m NOT going to fucking buy music on vinyl! No! NO! That’s goddamn ridiculous. NO!

shit. I really hope I don’t buy a turntable later.
