Post-Anthropocene Humanism

Cultivating the “third space” where nature, technology and human autonomy meet.

"... a post-Anthropocene humanism which Sloterdijk, following Martin Heidegger, calls “homo humanus” — a perpetually vigilant state of “caring” that mediates the relationship among humans, technique and nature to guard against the human becoming “inhuman, outside his essence.”

Okay CoSo. 🕊️

A tough one today for , but I promise you won't have read anything like this about Jenin from mainstream outlets.

That's because the latest IDF raid has been added to a long line of clickbait articles about a grave and complicated humanitarian crisis. (It's like everyone's eager for a Third Intifada. Grotesque.)

In this explainer, we sit with why Jenin is the site of so much violence - and ask how to bring hope to fellow humans again.

A day late on the , sorry folks. Hope you had a great July 4.

Today, we lean on John Stuart Mill and Marshall McLuhan to explore the difference between protecting free speech & protecting the public forums, the "containers" of speech, that make personal liberties possible & defensible.

Brain's still moving at a lower gear setting, but no matter.

On to 🍵, then OnlySky.

Happy hump day, whatever your lumps & bumps!

Just thinking out loud...

Some folks decry the use of virtual spaces and question their value. But just imagine what an online gathering via a CoSoCall or even in CoSoRealms might offer on a night like tonight when folks might be fighting demons and afraid of burdening others.

So much good can and could come from online communities, used wisely.

A little forward planning could make an impact.

Also, do you want to see what some of the best, fun, human-leaning SF is up to right now?

You're going to love R.S.A. Garcia's latest, up today at Uncanny Magazine. It's about Tantie Merle, an older Caribbean woman living out her days with a goat named Ignatius and... Farmhand 4200, the AI bot sent by family to try to help out.

It's got a great voice and a lot of heart. A wonderful smile of a read.

Whew. ! Readers!

Give this essay, on the commodification and over-glorification of "story", a try.

"What a different ancestor storytelling would have if we knew Scheherazade not as a triumphant, silver-tongued heroine but as a woman controlling her terror as she nurses her smallest baby and minds the other two, telling a story not because she thinks it will save the world, or herself, but because there is nothing else she can do."

🤔 I'm guessing that @th3j35t3r doesn't use his real birthday here, UNLESS this is a deep double deke of a mind game: knowing that *we* know he guards all his personal details, claiming July 4 as his birthday would have everyone assuming his real b-day *can't* be the 4th. It's the perfect cover for an actual July 4th baby! 😅

Well, however many levels deep of inception this conspiracy goes: Happy day, J, and thanks for letting us hang out here, making just the right level of asses of ourselves. 😉

I cannot stress enough how beautiful, epic, and lovingly crafted is ❤️ I haven't had this much genuine joy with a game in a really, really long time. I've played great games ... just not ones that gave me this level of relaxation and joy.

Now the real work of this month begins. 🙂

Aiming for life balance.

A completed novel MS.

And fully recorded audiobook for Children of Doro.

Amid: classes, articles, & weekly promo work on the newsletter & BookTube.

I am NOT going to expect completion of another story amid it all, even though I really need more work in queue.

This month the keyword is pragmatism.

Brought to you by the feelings:
1) Patience with oneself; and
2) Hope that there'll be time enough for the rest. 🤞

Cheers CoSo.

@Alfred What weighting does your algorithm give to the feedback you receive from users after they have asked you a question? In other words, how many users would have to tell you that an answer you gave them was incorrect before you would no longer produce the incorrect answer as an initial response to future queries?

After reaching the end of my Arabic on Duolingo I started reviewing my French, but in Spanish mode, to note syntactical similarities/differences and reclaim my French pronunciations (which Spanish killed for years - what a shock to lose a native tongue!).

The positive affirmations, though? Those are fun bonuses for sure. 🙂

Whew. This NYMag essay from June 20 is an unsettling but also deeply fascinating look at one part of the psychology of US voters right now, via RFK Jr.

Also, two episode recs from recent listening:

Remember Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't? These dudes are WICKED confident in some extremely technical know-how, but there's a lot of interesting science beyond the wave of names. A recent episode on fungi had some choice facts.

And Maddow's Déjà News posted a bonus crossover on Spiro Agnew, & what a deal in 1973 did to protect democracy that might be relevant for today's US politics. Cheers!

Back to the novel during my "free time" writing slots this week.

However, I just had one of those wee naps that leaves you so haunted by your dreaming that you wake feeling extra tired.

So... better sleep hygiene this week, first and foremost.

And good rigorous early morning exercise before classes and articles.

And *also* novel writing during free time.

Mythical life/work/writing balance, here I come! 🤞

Has anyone seen this documentary about the UN's Year of the Potato? Artistic expression in Perú, around histories of farming and feeding people! Good stuff.

Come for the reflection on !

Stay for the !

@MLClark Here's something else that might interest you ...

Another one of my writing mentors was Judy Burns, who wrote "The Tholian Web" for TOS. She used to teach Star Trek screenwriting classes at UCLA; sometimes I was a student, sometimes a T.A.

Anyway, here's a 2020 video interview she did with someone. Her career is quite the tale. (1/2)

@MLClark I retired two years ago after ten years doing education lectures and tours at Kennedy Space Center. The book was inspired by the common political questions I was asked by the public. My college education was Political Science, and I dabbled for years in politics, so this project is a natural.

I also have a YouTube channel, "Space SPAN," where I've been collecting space politics stuff.

Okay, CoSo. 🖖 It's time!

Today for , we talk about Strange New Worlds' time travel episode, which takes place more or less now in Canuckistan 🍁, and raises the classic Would You Kill Baby Hitler question around La'an's past.

Does it work? Does *any* time travel episode in ? What does this trope actually do - and does the romance help or hinder?

Come for the morality play! Stay for the poutine & Carol Kane!
